High school students interested in pursuing a career in food service will have the opportunity to gain valuable credentials through an upcoming 4-H ServSafe Manager Certification Course, sponsored by the University of Illinois Extension.

The course is open to youth ages 14 to 18 and will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, April 14 and 15, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Sauk Valley Community College.

The ServSafe certification provides participants with industry-recognized credentials that enhance credibility and emphasize food safety. The course is designed for students interested in careers in food service, starting a baking business, or assisting in community kitchens. Completion of the program can help participants qualify for higher-paying positions or advancement opportunities.

Course topics will include food safety principles, proper food handling and sanitation, prevention of foodborne illness, and leadership in food service environments.

The cost to attend is $80 per person. Registration is required by Wednesday, April 8, and can be completed online at SVCC.edu/commedenroll by selecting “College for Kids” and then “safety” to access the registration form. Participants must attend both sessions to qualify for the exam at the conclusion of the April 15 class. Membership in 4-H is not required to participate.

For additional class information, contact Kathy Book or Martha Ebbesmeyer at 815-632-3611. For registration questions, contact Brenda Helms at 815-835-6212.
