The Rock River Development Authority has been serving the Sauk Valley area since the mid-1980s. Originally established as a local chapter of a larger organization, it has evolved over the years into the sole remaining chapter, now operating as the Rock River Development Authority based in Rock Falls. The organization was founded by volunteers committed to improving local waterways and natural areas, and that mission continues today through community-driven projects.
One of the authority’s most visible efforts is its annual canal and river cleanup program. The canal cleanup is typically held each April around Earth Day, while the river cleanup takes place in early June before summer boat traffic increases and temperatures rise. These events have become the organization’s flagship volunteer projects and have helped remove countless pieces of debris from local waterways over the decades.
Beyond the annual cleanups, the organization also tackles other community improvement projects as needs arise. Volunteers have assisted with graffiti removal and responded to reports of environmental concerns that can be addressed through community service efforts.
The upcoming river cleanup depends heavily on volunteers, particularly those willing to use their boats to access difficult-to-reach areas along the river. Participants are assigned sections of the river and spend the morning collecting trash and debris that has accumulated throughout the year.
Over the years, volunteers have recovered a surprising assortment of items from the river. Among the more memorable discoveries have been a large spiral playground slide, shopping carts, car tires, car seats, a minivan hatch, and even numerous left shoes with no matching right shoes in sight. These unusual finds highlight both the challenges and importance of keeping local waterways clean.
According to Sommers, some of the debris enters the river through natural events such as flooding and high water, while other items appear to have been intentionally discarded. Regardless of how the trash arrives, the organization’s volunteers remain committed to improving the appearance and health of the river environment.
The 2026 Rock River Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, June 13. Volunteers will meet at Oppold Marina beginning at 7 a.m. to sign in, complete required waivers, and receive their cleanup assignments. The event is expected to conclude around 11 a.m., allowing participants to make a meaningful impact without committing their entire day.
Those interested in volunteering can contact the Rock River Development Authority through its Facebook page or simply arrive on the morning of the cleanup. While advance notice helps organizers plan, walk-up volunteers are welcome.
The organization is also seeking individuals interested in becoming more involved through board membership. Community members can attend meetings, learn more about the group’s activities, and explore opportunities to help guide future projects.
As the Rock River Development Authority approaches another cleanup season, its work serves as a reminder that protecting local waterways depends on community involvement. Through the efforts of dedicated volunteers, the river and canal systems that are central to the region’s identity continue to receive the care and attention they deserve.
