The Petunia Festival has been a staple in Dixon for more than six decades, bringing residents and visitors together each summer through entertainment, family activities, community events, and fireworks. The festival has continued to grow over the years while maintaining its focus on creating a welcoming atmosphere for all ages.
Festival organizers described the event as a celebration centered on family entertainment and community engagement. While many attendees are familiar with the carnival, parade, and live entertainment, the festival also offers a variety of activities that often go unnoticed.
One of the newer additions is the annual dog parade, which returns for its third year and encourages pet owners to bring their dogs downtown for a fun community event. Organizers have also expanded sports-related activities, including a soccer tournament that debuted in recent years.
Another feature gaining attention is the carnival’s quiet hours. Designed for children with sensory sensitivities, the program provides a calmer carnival experience by reducing lights and sounds. The special session includes free carnival armbands for participating children, though registration is required in advance.
This year’s festival also coincides with the nationwide celebration of America’s 250th birthday. Dixon has planned several community events connected to the milestone, including activities surrounding the city’s new pedestrian bridge and additional celebrations throughout the community.
The Petunia Festival officially runs from July 2 through July 5, although several community events occur before and during the festival. The carnival operates all five days, while entertainment takes place from Thursday through Sunday. Bingo returns for multiple days, and Sunday serves as the festival’s grand finale with the parade, live entertainment, and fireworks.
The fireworks display remains one of the festival’s signature attractions. This year’s show will feature patriotic music to recognize America’s 250th anniversary. The display is synchronized to music and continues to be one of the largest draws of the weekend.
Festival organizers expect the newly opened pedestrian bridge to become a popular viewing location, although longtime attendees often keep their favorite fireworks viewing spots a secret. Organizers encourage attendees to arrive early to secure a good location downtown.
Live music once again plays a major role in the festival lineup. Thursday’s entertainment features Chicago-area band Louder Now. Friday night brings alternative rock favorites Gin Blossoms to Dixon after a previous appearance was canceled during the pandemic. Saturday shifts to country music with Grand Barham taking the stage, while local musicians perform throughout the weekend.
Sunday evening features Two Hyped Crew before the fireworks finale, providing a high-energy conclusion to the festival.
Behind the scenes, the Petunia Festival relies heavily on volunteers and community support. The organization is operated entirely by volunteers, and organizers say hundreds of volunteer opportunities are available each year. Volunteers assist with gates, parking, beverage tents, individual events, and other festival operations.
More than 80 businesses support the festival through sponsorships, donations, and in-kind services, helping ensure the event remains a longstanding community tradition.
Organizers emphasized that the festival is truly a community effort involving local businesses, volunteers, city officials, and residents who work together to create an enjoyable experience for visitors.
For many organizers, the most rewarding moment comes on opening night, when the work of months of preparation gives way to families gathering downtown, enjoying music, visiting the carnival, and spending time together.
