Along the Rock: S3 Ep 118-Creating a Dementia-Friendly Community in Sterling, Illinois

Hosted by Kierstyn Long, Article by Sara Bellows
On this episode of Along the Rock, host Kierstyn Long welcomed Beth Sterk of CGH and Sami Wiggins of Caster Home Health Solutions to discuss a new initiative that is bringing awareness, education, and support to individuals living with dementia and their caregivers throughout the Sterling community.

The newly launched Dementia Friendly Sterling initiative was recently recognized by the City of Sterling through an official proclamation, marking an important milestone for local advocates who have spent the past year working toward designation through Dementia Friendly America. The initiative seeks to create a community where individuals living with dementia feel understood, supported, and included in everyday life.

Beth Sterk explained that dementia-friendly communities focus on increasing awareness and reducing barriers that individuals with cognitive challenges often face. The goal is to help people continue participating in their communities while preserving their independence and dignity.

The initiative plans to work with local businesses, organizations, and institutions to provide specialized training that helps employees better understand the needs of people living with dementia. Training opportunities will be available for sectors such as banking, libraries, faith communities, legal services, and other organizations that regularly interact with the public.

Businesses that complete the training will receive a Dementia Friendly Sterling decal to display at their entrances, signaling to individuals and caregivers that staff members have received education on how to provide supportive and understanding interactions.

The conversation also explored the meaning of dementia and the many conditions that fall under its umbrella. While Alzheimer’s disease is the most recognized form, other types of dementia affect different parts of the brain and can create unique challenges involving memory, decision-making, communication, spatial awareness, and everyday tasks.

Sterk explained that cognitive changes often affect a person’s ability to process information, complete financial transactions, or make decisions, which can create difficult experiences in public settings. The initiative hopes that increased education will encourage patience, understanding, and accommodations that allow individuals to remain active members of the community.

The guests also discussed Millie, a comfort dog who serves as part of the support team. Millie provides companionship and emotional comfort to individuals experiencing cognitive changes, helping reduce anxiety and create meaningful connections during difficult moments.

One of the most significant aspects of the Dementia Friendly Sterling Action Team is the inclusion of individuals who are personally living with dementia. Their participation provides valuable firsthand insight into the challenges people face and helps guide the team’s efforts to make meaningful improvements throughout the community.

The guests emphasized that hearing directly from those experiencing cognitive changes allows the team to better understand where support is needed and how businesses and organizations can create more positive experiences.

Caregivers were another important focus of the discussion. Many families experience feelings of isolation, guilt, or uncertainty after a loved one receives a diagnosis. By increasing awareness and openly discussing dementia, the initiative hopes to reduce stigma and ensure caregivers know they are not alone.

The CGH Health Foundation’s dementia project program provides free assistance to individuals and families, regardless of whether they are CGH patients. The program helps connect people to local resources, caregiver support, home services, and community organizations that can provide assistance.

Both guests emphasized that the Sauk Valley area already offers many valuable resources for individuals living with dementia and their families. The new initiative seeks to bring those resources together while encouraging community members to learn more and become involved.

As Dementia Friendly Sterling begins its work, organizers hope the movement will continue to grow throughout the community. Through education, training, and increased awareness, the initiative aims to create a welcoming environment where individuals living with dementia feel respected, supported, and included.
