The Sterling-Rock Falls Jaycees are a leadership and service organization focused on community involvement, volunteerism, and developing future leaders. While the organization currently consists of approximately 15 members, Sanders emphasized that membership is open to both men and women under the age of 40 and that the group is actively seeking additional volunteers.
The organization’s fundraising efforts support several major initiatives throughout the year, including the annual Fourth of July fireworks display, Christmas for Kids, a golf outing, and the return of the Jaycees chili cook-off.
One of the largest undertakings for the Jaycees is organizing the community fireworks celebration. Sanders explained that the process involves much more than simply purchasing fireworks. The organization spends months raising funds, securing sponsorships, obtaining permits, purchasing insurance, and coordinating with local governments to ensure the event can take place safely.
This year’s fireworks display is expected to be larger than usual as the community celebrates America’s 250th anniversary. Both Sterling and Rock Falls contributed funding toward the event, allowing the Jaycees to significantly increase their budget.
The fireworks display will once again be held near Lawrence Park, utilizing both riverfront areas in Sterling and Rock Falls. The expanded celebration will include concessions, light-up toys, and family-friendly activities in addition to the fireworks show.
Sanders noted that a professional pyrotechnics company designs and executes the display based on the available budget. In previous years, the organization has typically invested between $10,000 and $15,000 into the event, with additional fundraising helping offset costs. The Jaycees continue accepting donations and sponsorships to support this year’s celebration.
Community members and businesses can contribute through the organization’s social media pages and various sponsorship opportunities. Donations of any amount help support the annual fireworks show.
Following the Independence Day celebration, the Jaycees shift their attention to additional fundraising efforts that support Christmas for Kids and other community programs. The organization’s annual golf outing is scheduled for August at Deer Valley, followed by the chili cook-off and various fall fundraising activities.
One of the organization’s most impactful programs is Christmas for Kids. Last year, the Jaycees helped approximately 70 local children during the holiday season, a significant increase from previous years. Through partnerships with other local organizations, participating children also received winter coats.
Sanders described the program as a direct community investment, with funds raised locally staying within the community to benefit local families.
The Jaycees meet once each month and welcome anyone interested in becoming involved. Sanders said the organization is looking for volunteers who want to help with events, fundraising, and community projects.
As the Sterling-Rock Falls area prepares for an expanded Independence Day celebration and additional community events throughout the year, the Jaycees continue working behind the scenes to provide opportunities for families, support local children, and strengthen the community through volunteer service.
