Along the Rock: S3 Ep 125-How Shining Star Advocacy Center Helps Child Abuse Survivors Heal

Hosted by Kierstyn Long, Article by Sara Bellows
On this episode of Along the Rock, host Kierstyn Long spoke with Jessica Cash, executive director and forensic interviewer for Shining Star Children's Advocacy Center, about the organization's mission to support children and teens who have experienced abuse while working alongside law enforcement and child protection agencies.

Shining Star Children’s Advocacy Center serves children ages 3 to 18 throughout Lee and Ogle counties who are involved in investigations related to allegations of sexual abuse, severe physical abuse, witnessing violent crime, or other traumatic events. Instead of being interviewed in a police station or hospital, children come to the advocacy center, where interviews take place in a child-friendly setting designed to help them feel comfortable during an already difficult experience.

The center features welcoming spaces with child-sized furniture, age-appropriate games, and colorful artwork, creating an environment that helps reduce stress for children and teens during forensic interviews.

Children are referred to Shining Star through law enforcement agencies or the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services as part of an active investigation. The organization works as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes investigators, prosecutors, and medical professionals to ensure each case is handled collaboratively.

While forensic interviews are a key service, the organization’s support extends far beyond that first appointment.

Shining Star provides family advocacy services to connect non-offending caregivers with resources such as housing assistance, food, clothing, orders of protection, and referrals to specialized medical providers for child abuse examinations. The center also offers in-house counseling, support groups for children, teens, and caregivers, and summer camps designed specifically for children who have received services through the organization.

Those programs are intended to help children continue their healing journey while also giving them opportunities to simply enjoy being kids in a supportive environment.

The organization also provides ongoing training for law enforcement officers, prosecutors, DCFS investigators and medical professionals to ensure they remain informed about evolving child abuse investigations, including crimes involving technology and online exploitation.

Community support plays a significant role in helping the nonprofit continue its work.

Shining Star accepts donations of comfort items for children, including blankets, stuffed animals, journals, fidget toys, snacks and drinks. Every child who visits the center receives a comfort bag filled with items they can take home following their interview.

The organization also encourages civic groups, businesses and community organizations to host fundraisers or supply drives. Those efforts allow staff to focus on serving children while community partners help generate financial support and needed donations.

Several fundraising events are scheduled for this summer, including Culver’s fundraising nights in Dixon and Rochelle, along with Quarter Mania on July 21. Event details and updates are available through Shining Star’s website and Facebook page.

In addition to its Dixon office inside Commerce Towers near OSF HealthCare Saint Katharine Medical Center, Shining Star is preparing to open a satellite office in Oregon to better serve families in Ogle County.

Cash also encouraged community members to report suspected child abuse whenever concerns arise. Reports can be made through the Illinois DCFS hotline or by contacting local law enforcement, even if someone does not have definitive proof that abuse has occurred.
