Bentley explains that the musical earned its return after years of requests from community members who remembered how much fun the original production was. More than a decade after Woodlawn last staged the show, the creative team felt it was the perfect opportunity to bring back a production that combines comedy, memorable music, and a unique interactive experience.
Unlike many traditional musicals, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee invites audience members to become part of the action. Volunteers can sign up before each performance to participate in the onstage spelling bee alongside the cast. Participation is completely optional, giving adventurous audience members the chance to join in the fun while everyone else can simply enjoy the performance from their seats.
Bentley says rehearsals have been filled with coordinated chaos as the cast prepares for a production packed with challenging music, energetic performances, and nonstop character moments. While the show demands plenty from its performers, the cast says the process has been just as enjoyable as the final product.
Much of that enjoyment comes from the close friendships among the cast and crew. Bentley describes the theater community as one big family that grows each summer, allowing longtime performers and newcomers alike to create lasting friendships both on and off the stage. That chemistry carries into every performance and helps make each show feel fresh and authentic.
Jenna Mingus portrays Rona Lisa Peretti, the enthusiastic former spelling bee champion who now serves as host of the competition. Throughout the show, Rona guides contestants through the event while celebrating every moment of the competition with infectious enthusiasm.
Joel Megill takes on the role of Vice Principal Douglas Panch, the nervous official responsible for pronouncing the spelling words. In addition to Panch, Megill also plays another character during the production, requiring quick costume, posture, and personality changes throughout the show. He says those rapid character transitions have become one of the most rewarding aspects of preparing for the musical.
The cast also highlights the show’s improvisational elements, which make every performance different. Audience volunteers, spontaneous interactions, and playful exchanges between characters ensure that no two productions are exactly alike, giving theater fans a new experience every time they attend.
For Bentley, directing the show is about more than staging a musical. She says working alongside talented performers who genuinely enjoy spending time together creates an atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable taking creative risks and embracing the playful nature of live theater.
The production opens Thursday, July 9, and continues through Saturday, July 11, on the outdoor stage behind Woodlawn Arts Academy. Admission is free, and guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. Small concessions will also be available.
Because the musical includes some mature themes, the production is recommended for audiences ages 13 and older.
Whether you’re interested in stepping onto the stage as a volunteer speller or simply looking for an entertaining evening of live theater, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee promises an energetic mix of comedy, music, and audience interaction that has made it one of Woodlawn Arts Academy’s most requested productions.
