Jones shares details about the annual event, which celebrates bald eagles, wildlife education, and outdoor winter fun in Rock Falls. The day begins with eagle watching along the Rock River near the Lower Dam, where visitors are encouraged to bring cameras and binoculars to observe eagles fishing and soaring overhead. Jones notes that colder weather often brings larger numbers of eagles to the area, sometimes more than 100 at a time. She also reminds attendees to follow proper eagle-viewing etiquette by keeping noise to a minimum and maintaining a respectful distance.
After eagle watching, activities shift indoors to the Rock Falls American Legion, where presentations will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. One of the biggest highlights this year is a live eagle presentation by Hoo Haven Wildlife Rehabilitation & Education — the first time a live eagle has appeared at the event. Additional birds, including owls, will also be part of the presentation.
Other scheduled programs include a Native American cultural presentation focusing on the significance of the eagle, a hands-on wildlife experience from Incredible Bats featuring animals ranging from bats and snakes to tarantulas and armadillos, and a nature photography presentation by local photographer Paul Gierhart highlighting eagles and birds along the Rock Falls birding trail.
New to the event this year is a special guest sure to draw attention — Rico the sloth. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet Rico, with optional photo opportunities available for a small fee. Ice carving demonstrations by Robert Storm will also take place, with finished carvings later displayed at RB&W Park for the public to enjoy.
In addition to presentations, the event will feature educational vendors, children’s activities, food, and a free raffle for a hand-carved wooden eagle. Participants must be present to win.
