Along the Rock: S3 Ep 135-Growing the Next Generation: Youth Agriculture Takes Center Stage at Twin City Farmers Market

Hosted by Kierstyn Long, Article by Sara Bellows
On this episode of Along the Rock, host Kierstyn Long is joined by Dallas Knack of the Sauk Valley Chamber of Commerce and Lori VanOosten of the Twin City Farmers Market to discuss the new event, which will be held Saturday, July 18. The market is designed for youth ages 5 to 18 who participate in agriculture-related programs, including 4-H and FFA, allowing them to showcase projects, sell products and connect with the community.

The event is part of the Sauk Valley Chamber of Commerce’s ongoing efforts to promote agriculture, one of the region’s largest industries and employers. Organizers hope the market will encourage young people to explore careers in agriculture while helping residents better understand the industry’s importance to the local economy.

Participants will feature a variety of products and projects. While visitors can expect traditional agricultural offerings, the market will also include handmade items such as fresh flower bouquets and baked goods like French bread, highlighting the diverse skills young exhibitors develop through agricultural education programs.

The Youth Agriculture Market also aims to inspire community members who may have little firsthand experience with farming. Organizers noted that many lifelong residents have never visited a farm, making events like this an opportunity to bridge that gap and increase awareness about modern agriculture and the many career paths it offers.

The event also complements another recent Chamber initiative, Sauk Valley Young Creators, a four-week entrepreneurship program for middle school students. The program gave students from communities across the Sauk Valley the chance to develop business ideas and operate pop-up businesses, helping them gain hands-on entrepreneurial experience. Some of those young business owners are expected to participate in the Youth Agriculture Market as well.

VanOosten also highlighted the Twin City Farmers Market’s year-round operation. The indoor market is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon throughout the year, while the outdoor market runs from May through October. The outdoor season concludes Oct. 31 with a family-friendly event featuring trick-or-treating and a petting zoo.

Although outdoor vendor space is becoming limited as the season progresses, applications remain available for interested vendors, with additional openings expected later in the season as produce vendors begin to wrap up.

The Youth Agriculture Market offers more than a chance to shop locally. It provides an opportunity to support young entrepreneurs, encourage agricultural education, and invest in the future of one of the Sauk Valley’s most important industries.
