The Optimist Club is part of Optimist International, a global service organization dedicated to improving the lives of young people. While the organization has clubs around the world, each local chapter has the flexibility to focus on the unique needs of its own community. In Sterling, that means supporting children and students through scholarships, leadership opportunities, educational programs, and community service.
One of the club’s biggest annual fundraising events is the Bucket Brigade, which returns Saturday, July 18. Throughout the morning, club members will be stationed at several intersections in downtown Sterling collecting donations from passing motorists. Every dollar raised during the event is dedicated to scholarships for students attending Sauk Valley Community College.
The scholarship program allows local students to apply by submitting essays describing their educational goals, community involvement, and financial need. Club members review the applications and award scholarships each year, helping make higher education more affordable for area graduates.
For those who don’t carry cash, donating has become easier in recent years. The Optimist Club also accepts donations via Venmo, allowing supporters to contribute during the fundraiser or year-round.
Beyond the Bucket Brigade, the Optimist Club remains active with several fundraising events, including cookouts at community gatherings and its popular annual trivia night each November. This year’s trivia event will feature a family theme with questions designed for multiple generations, along with a large silent auction featuring donated baskets from businesses and organizations across the region.
The club’s impact extends far beyond fundraising.
One of its ongoing partnerships is with Sterling Middle School’s Challand campus through the Optimist of the Month program. Eligible students write essays focused on community service and philanthropy. Each monthly winner receives a cash award, with half designated for the student and the other half donated to a charity of the student’s choice. The program encourages young people to think about giving back while recognizing their achievements.
The Optimist Club also promotes public speaking through the Optimist Oratorical Contest, an international speech competition that allows middle and high school students to compete for scholarship money. Participants prepare a four- to five-minute speech and advance through local, regional, state and international competitions. Students can earn scholarships at every level, with the international finals awarding thousands of dollars toward college expenses.
Despite the significant scholarship opportunities, Meier said participation from local students has been lower than expected in recent years. He hopes more families will learn about the competition and encourage students to take advantage of the program.
In addition to serving local youth, the club is also seeking new members interested in making a positive impact in the community. Whether someone is retired, beginning a career, or simply looking to volunteer, the organization offers opportunities to mentor young people while helping to fund educational programs and scholarships throughout the Sauk Valley.
