On this episode of Along the Rock, host Kierstyn Long welcomed Teri Crawford of Heroes of Hope of the Sauk Valley, along with Chris Schueler and Tony Walters of the YSJ Open, to discuss two upcoming charity golf outings that combine friendly competition, creative course challenges, and fundraising for local causes.

Heroes of Hope of the Sauk Valley is a newly formed nonprofit created by Crawford after years of serving as a Wish Granter with Make-A-Wish Illinois. Establishing the organization as a 501(c)(3) allows Heroes of Hope to continue raising money for charitable causes throughout the region.

This year’s Heroes of Hope Golf Outing will benefit Path to the Future, a local organization dedicated to teaching practical life skills to youth and teenagers. The program focuses on hands-on experiences, including cooking, sewing, automotive basics, construction, and other everyday skills that many young people may not otherwise have the opportunity to learn.

The outing takes place Aug. 8 and features several unique attractions, including a popular cannonball charity hole. Participants can use a golf ball launcher capable of sending shots hundreds of yards toward a target, with the closest shot earning the chance to win a trip to Las Vegas. All proceeds from the charity hole support the featured nonprofit.

Registration is currently open, with early bird pricing available through July 18. Organizers say only a limited number of team spots remain, making early registration important for anyone hoping to participate.

Beyond the golf outing, Heroes of Hope continues to seek volunteers and financial supporters. Crawford explained that additional fundraising events are planned throughout the year and that community members can also contribute by volunteering their time.

Schueler and Walters also discussed the YSJ Open, an event that has quickly grown into one of the area’s most anticipated golf outings. The tournament has already sold out this year and will benefit Heroes of Hope of the Sauk Valley.

The organizers attribute the tournament’s popularity to its welcoming atmosphere. Rather than focusing on serious competition, the outing is designed to give golfers of all experience levels an enjoyable day filled with laughter, creative games, and memorable moments on the course.

Several signature holes have become fan favorites over the years. Participants can take on a Happy Gilmore-inspired driving and putting challenge, compete in a charity hole with cash prizes, spin a wheel to determine which club they must use, and participate in traditional contests such as longest drive and closest to the pin. This year’s event will also introduce the cannonball launcher featured at the Heroes of Hope outing.

Since its inception, the YSJ Open has raised nearly $15,000 for local charities while maintaining its mission of putting golfers first and creating an event that emphasizes fun just as much as fundraising.

For those unable to secure a spot in the sold-out YSJ Open, organizers encouraged golfers to register for the Heroes of Hope outing while openings remain.
