Taylor explains that he was invited to create the mural after Rock Falls Tourism recognized both his artistic talent and his elaborate holiday displays that have become well-known throughout the city. The opportunity was especially meaningful because he had admired the Veterans Park wall for years and had often imagined transforming the blank space into a work of art.
Although city officials provided the overall concept, Taylor customized the design to create a more dynamic and visually engaging piece. Rather than keeping the flag rigid and flat, he adjusted the flowing stripes and repositioned the military silhouettes across the four sections of the curved wall, giving the mural a sense of movement while maintaining its patriotic message.
Painting the mural took approximately two to three weeks as Taylor balanced the project with his full-time job as a school bus driver. Working between morning and afternoon bus routes and returning in the evenings, he steadily brought the mural to life. During that time, many community members stopped by to watch his progress, including several veterans who shared stories and thanked him for honoring those who have served.
The project carried personal significance for Taylor, whose family has a long history of military service. His sister is a retired Army veteran after more than two decades of service, and several other family members have also served in the military. That connection made the opportunity to create a tribute for Veterans Park even more meaningful.
Beyond Veterans Park, Taylor has spent years creating artwork throughout the region. His murals can be found in numerous Rock Falls schools, where colorful artwork brightens hallways and inspires students. He also discussed how his artistic talent has become part of his role as a school bus driver, decorating his bus with hand-painted Marvel and DC superhero artwork that captures students’ attention and creates a fun atmosphere during their rides to school.
The conversation also highlights Taylor’s growing portfolio outside the Sauk Valley. In addition to murals in Rock Falls and Sterling, he has recently completed artwork for schools in Rockford, demonstrating that his reputation as a mural artist continues to expand.
Looking ahead, Taylor hopes to continue creating public artwork throughout the community. One project he would like to pursue is painting murals at the local American Legion, potentially depicting various periods of American military history to honor veterans from multiple generations.
Taylor also shares that he accepts commissioned artwork for businesses and organizations interested in murals or custom artistic projects, making his work available for future community improvements across the region.
