Brito said the recognition means a great deal because it reflects the community’s appreciation for the premium ice cream and welcoming atmosphere the shop has worked to create.
While the handcrafted ice cream is the main attraction, Brito believes the experience is what sets Sundae Funday apart. The shop features a spacious outdoor patio where families can relax, enjoy dessert together, play games, and spend quality time away from their phones.
Located at 315 W. Second St. in downtown Rock Falls, Sundae Funday is open seven days a week from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., making it a popular stop for locals and visitors during the summer months.
Beyond traditional scoops, Sundae Funday has introduced specialty treats that have become customer favorites throughout the Sauk Valley. Their mangonadas feature fresh fruit, chamoy, TajÃn seasoning, and a spicy tamarind candy stick, while seasonal variations include watermelon, orange, lime, and kiwi. The shop also serves refreshing acai bowls topped with fresh fruit for customers looking for a lighter option.
Brito shared that the business began with a dream from his late father. After years of living in the Chicago area, Brito would often take his father out for ice cream during visits. His father repeatedly remarked that the Sauk Valley needed a place offering premium ice cream and a family-friendly atmosphere. After his father’s passing, the opportunity arose to purchase the downtown Rock Falls building, allowing Brito and his family to bring that dream to life.
When asked about his personal favorite menu item, Brito didn’t hesitate.
The ice cream nachos top his list. The dessert features house-made waffle chips baked fresh each week and served with two scoops of ice cream, whipped cream, sprinkles, and cherries. The combination of crunchy waffle chips and creamy ice cream has become one of the shop’s signature offerings.
In addition to desserts, Sundae Funday also offers savory snacks, including walking tacos, nachos, chips and guacamole, giving customers something to enjoy before satisfying their sweet tooth.
During the episode, Brito also showcased several popular flavors available at the shop. Among them was the best-selling Rhubarb Crumble, made with caramel ice cream, salted cashews and fudge. He also introduced Munchie Madness, a cake batter ice cream loaded with Oreos, M&M’s, caramel swirl and peanut butter cups. Other featured favorites included Black Cherry ice cream with large cherry pieces and seasonal Kiwi and Strawberry Italian Ice, both made with real fruit and dairy-free for customers with lactose intolerance.
Long sampled the Munchie Madness during the interview, praising its combination of flavors and declaring it a dessert that satisfies every ice cream craving in one scoop.
Another exciting addition this year is the Sundae Funday ice cream truck. Brito said the mobile operation allows the business to attend community events throughout the region. After debuting at the Rock Falls riverfront fireworks celebration, the truck is now expanding its schedule and will serve customers during the Whiteside County Fair from Aug. 18-22. While the storefront offers 24 flavors, the truck carries 10 of the most popular options, including dairy-free selections.
Throughout the conversation, Brito emphasized that Sundae Funday aims to provide something for everyone, whether customers are looking for classic premium ice cream, fruit-filled frozen treats, or simply a comfortable place to gather with family and friends.
For listeners craving a sweet treat or looking to discover one of the Sauk Valley’s favorite dessert destinations, this episode offers a behind-the-scenes look at the story, passion, and community spirit behind Sundae Funday.
