Along the Rock: S3 Ep 145-National Night Out: Rock Falls & Dixon Police Invite the Community to Connect!

Hosted by Kierstyn Long, Article by Sara Bellows
On this episode of Along the Rock, host Kierstyn Long sat down with Rock Falls Police Chief Ryan McKanna and Dixon Police Officer Lucas Kammerer to discuss National Night Out, an annual event focused on strengthening relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

Although each department hosts its own event, both share the same mission: creating opportunities for residents to meet first responders in a relaxed, family-friendly environment while learning about local resources and public safety.

National Night Out began in the Philadelphia area during the 1980s as a neighborhood outreach initiative and has since grown into a nationwide event held on the first Tuesday of August. Today, police departments across the country participate by hosting community gatherings that encourage positive interactions between residents and law enforcement.

Chief McKanna explained that events like National Night Out help remind residents that officers are more than the uniforms they wear. They are parents, neighbors, and community members who share the same goals of building safe, thriving neighborhoods.

For Rock Falls, this year’s National Night Out marks the department’s second time hosting the event after launching the local tradition in 2024. The Rock Falls Police Department and Sterling Police Department alternate hosting responsibilities each year, allowing both communities to support one another while keeping the event fresh.

The Rock Falls event will feature free hot dogs, donated ice cream from Culver’s, face painting, prize raffles, bicycles, fishing poles, children’s activities, and informational booths from local organizations including Whiteside County Housing Authority and Sauk Valley Bank.

The department will also provide educational materials covering topics such as cybercrime, online scams, and cyberbullying to help residents recognize and avoid increasingly common fraud attempts.

Chief McKanna also highlighted the efforts of administrative assistant Joy Colberg and Sgt. Betony Gluff, who coordinated much of the planning by working with local businesses and organizations to secure donations and community participation.

Beyond National Night Out, the Rock Falls Police Department continues its commitment to community outreach through Operation Santa Claus, a holiday program that partners officers with local families in need. Officers shop for gifts, wrap presents, and personally deliver them with Santa before Christmas, often alongside members of the Rock Falls Fire Department.

Officer Lucas Kammerer shared how the Dixon Police Department’s version of National Night Out has developed over the past three years. While the department participated in the event years ago, it was revived in 2024 as part of an ongoing effort to strengthen community policing and encourage positive interactions outside of emergency situations.

Dixon’s event centers around a popular Touch-a-Truck experience at The Facility at the Dixon Park District. Children and families can explore police vehicles, fire trucks, snowplows, tractors, public works equipment, and other specialty vehicles while meeting the people who operate them every day.

The event also welcomes organizations that partner with first responders, including agencies that provide mental health and social services. Kammerer said introducing residents to these organizations in a comfortable setting helps reduce anxiety if they ever need those services in the future.

The Dixon Park District location offers additional attractions including a playground, splash pad, soccer fields, and indoor facilities if weather forces activities inside. Like Rock Falls, the entire event is free to attend.

Kammerer said National Night Out provides opportunities for families—especially children—to meet police officers and first responders outside of stressful situations. Building those positive connections helps make future interactions more comfortable and encourages residents to approach officers whenever they have questions or simply want to say hello.

Following National Night Out, the Dixon Police Department will begin preparing for its annual Cops and Bobbers fishing event in September, another program designed to connect officers with local youth. The department also remains active throughout the school year by participating in school walkthroughs and recreational activities with students.

National Night Out events in both Rock Falls and Dixon demonstrate how local police departments continue investing in community partnerships through education, outreach, and family-friendly activities that bring neighbors and first responders together.
