Along the Rock: S3 Ep 150-Helping Kids Beat Back-to-School Anxiety | Free Counseling Event with Strategic Steps Counseling

Hosted by Kierstyn Long, Article by Sara Bellows
On the latest episode of Along the Rock, host Kierstyn Long spoke with Matthew Pearlman, owner and clinical director of Strategic Steps Counseling, about his newly opened practice and the upcoming event focused on helping children manage back-to-school nerves.

Strategic Steps Counseling opened in January, marking the realization of Pearlman’s longtime goal of owning his own practice. After completing his clinical hours and earning his license, he launched the Sterling-based practice with a focus on providing accessible mental health services close to home.

Pearlman said working with children has always been one of his passions. Drawing from his own experiences with school-related anxiety, he wanted to create a welcoming environment where kids can talk openly about their concerns before classes begin.

The free event will give children an opportunity to meet peers who may be experiencing similar emotions while learning practical coping strategies they can use throughout the school year. Rather than feeling like a formal therapy session, the gathering is designed to be relaxed and engaging, with activities that help children feel comfortable discussing their feelings.

Pearlman hopes participants leave with greater confidence and a few helpful tools to manage anxious moments once school begins. Because every child experiences anxiety differently, the event will introduce a variety of coping techniques that children can try and adapt to their own needs.

If the first event is well attended, Pearlman said he hopes to continue offering similar group sessions throughout the school year.

The event will be held Thursday, Aug. 14, from 5 to 6 p.m. at Strategic Steps Counseling, 603 First Ave., Suite 202, Sterling. The office is located upstairs, with signs directing visitors to the practice.

Attendance is free, but families are asked to register in advance. Parents can contact Strategic Steps Counseling by phone, text, email or through the practice’s social media pages to reserve a spot. Registration paperwork will be completed before children participate.

Pearlman said providing free opportunities like this helps remove financial barriers that may prevent families from accessing mental health resources. His goal is to create a supportive space where children can connect with others, learn healthy coping skills, and begin the school year feeling more prepared.
