The Rock Falls River Chase showcases stock outboard boat racing on the Rock River. Hicks explained that the event originally began in the 1980s before disappearing for several years. After growing up watching the races and later moving across the street from the race site, he helped bring the event back in 2014 and has remained heavily involved ever since.
Since its return, the River Chase has continued attracting racers of all ages, from youth competitors to veteran drivers in their 70s. Hicks said the sport remains a family tradition for many participants, with multiple generations often competing together.
The River Chase is expected to feature racers from across the Midwest, though attendance varies depending on competing race schedules. Organizers hope to welcome racers from Michigan and other states this year as they continue working to grow the event.
To build on the success of the River Chase, Jones partnered with Hicks to launch Aqua Palooza, creating a full weekend of activities throughout Rock Falls.
The festivities begin Saturday, Aug. 15, with the Optimist Club Fishing Derby at Centennial Park, where children can fish for free and enjoy hot dogs and other refreshments. Boat racing will continue throughout the day before the evening wraps up with a free concert by Brotherhood at the RB&W District. One of the band’s members is also a boat racer, adding another connection to the weekend’s theme.
Sunday features additional River Chase races along with the inaugural Cardboard Regatta at Centennial Park. Participants will build boats using only cardboard and duct tape before racing them across the water. Awards will recognize categories such as creativity and other achievements, with organizers hoping the competition becomes an annual tradition.
The weekend concludes with the Sauk Valley Water Ski Show duck races at nearby Seward Park, providing another family-friendly attraction to round out the festivities.
Registration is now open for the Cardboard Regatta, while the fishing derby does not require advance registration. Organizers encourage both participants and spectators to attend, noting that visitors will have the opportunity to view the homemade boats before they launch.
Admission to nearly every event throughout the weekend is free. The only fee is a small registration cost for Cardboard Regatta participants, which helps cover the cost of trophies and event expenses. Food vendors will also be available at several event locations during the weekend.
With high-speed boat racing, live music, fishing, creative competitions and family activities spread across several Rock Falls parks, organizers hope River Chase Weekend and Aqua Palooza will become one of the community’s signature summer celebrations.
