Along the Rock: S3 Ep 163-Inside Sterling’s Citizens Police Academy: Learn What It Takes to Be a Police Officer

Hosted by Kierstyn Long, Article by Sara Bellows
The Sterling Police Department is once again opening its doors to the community through its annual Citizens Police Academy, offering residents a firsthand look at the people, programs, and responsibilities that keep the department running.

On this episode of Along the Rock, host Kierstyn Long spoke with Mary Toth of the Sterling Police Department, accompanied by Millie, the department’s beloved police dog, about the free seven-week program designed to educate and connect with the public.

The Citizens Police Academy is held once each year during the fall, giving participants an inside look at law enforcement operations while helping strengthen relationships between officers and the community. The academy is also valuable for anyone considering a career in law enforcement by providing practical insight into the profession before making that commitment.

The upcoming academy begins Sept. 9 and runs through Oct. 21. Classes are held on Wednesday evenings over the course of seven weeks.

Each session focuses on a different aspect of the department. Participants hear presentations from police officers as well as civilian staff members who play vital roles behind the scenes. Topics range from the department’s organizational structure and records division to crime scene investigations, DUI enforcement, high-risk traffic stops, and the work of the department chaplain. The program highlights that a police department relies on far more than just sworn officers to serve the community.

Registration is available through the City of Sterling website at sterling-il.gov by completing a fillable PDF application. Applications may be emailed, mailed, or dropped off at the Sterling Police Department. Participants must be at least 18 years old, and certain misdemeanor or felony convictions may disqualify applicants.

The academy is completely free to attend. Participants are simply encouraged to come ready to learn, participate, and engage in discussions. Enrollment is limited to approximately 20 people to ensure everyone can fully participate in classroom presentations and activities. Applications for this year’s class are due by Aug. 26.

At the conclusion of the academy, participants take part in a graduation ceremony complete with certificates and refreshments, recognizing their completion of the program.

While the academy can serve as a stepping stone for those interested in law enforcement careers, most participants simply want to better understand how their local police department operates. The classes provide an opportunity to ask questions, have meaningful conversations, and gain a greater appreciation for the work performed by department personnel.

Adding a little extra charm to the program is Millie, who serves as the academy’s unofficial ambassador. She greets attendees each week, makes new friends throughout the sessions, and even receives treats from participants. During one class, Toth also presents information about Millie’s role within the department, giving attendees a closer look at how the police dog contributes to community engagement.

For residents looking to learn more about policing in Sterling, the Citizens Police Academy offers a unique opportunity to step behind the scenes and experience the department from a new perspective.
