On this episode of Along the Rock, host Kierstyn Long sat down with Dixon Theatre Executive Director Spencer Aurand to discuss the upcoming performance, why the theater is expanding its variety of shows, and what audiences can expect from Westford’s appearance.
Aurand said the theater has not hosted a magician in quite some time, making Westford’s performance a welcome addition to the season. As the theater continues to diversify its programming, bringing in more family-oriented entertainment has become a priority. Finding a magician, however, required reaching out to a new network of talent representatives because illusionists often work through different booking agencies than musicians and tribute acts.
Westford came highly recommended, making him an ideal choice for the Dixon Theatre.
Magic shows also attract a different audience than many of the theater’s traditional concerts. While tribute bands often bring in adults and families introducing younger generations to classic music, illusion shows appeal to audiences of all ages, including teenagers and families looking for entertainment everyone can enjoy. Aurand said those performances also introduce many first-time visitors to the Dixon Theatre while giving returning patrons something different from the usual concert offerings.
Westford’s performance will focus on large-scale illusions, including disappearing acts, reappearances and stage illusions performed with an assistant. Beyond the visual spectacle, audiences can also expect plenty of comedy. Rather than presenting a serious or mysterious stage persona, Westford incorporates humor throughout the performance, creating an entertaining experience alongside the illusions.
The show begins at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 18. Tickets range from $20 to $45, with premium box seating available.
Dixon residents can also take advantage of the theater’s resident discount program, which offers select seats for just $10. Residents simply need to visit the Dixon Theatre box office and provide proof of residency to receive the discounted tickets. Aurand said the program serves as a thank-you to the City of Dixon for its continued support of the historic theater.
In addition to the magic show, the Radar Free Press is partnering with the Dixon Theatre to give away 10 pairs of tickets to the performance. Readers can enter the drawing by visiting theradar.online. Winners will be contacted before the show.
Looking ahead, Aurand also highlighted an Elton John tribute show coming to the Dixon Theatre at the end of September. The production regularly performs as a Las Vegas residency before touring nationally and features elaborate costume changes, live piano performances and many of Elton John’s biggest hits.
For theatergoers planning to attend multiple performances, Aurand encouraged purchasing tickets together. Buying three or five shows qualifies patrons for package discounts of 20% or 25%, providing additional savings throughout the season.
The conversation concluded on a lighthearted note as Long asked Aurand whether he believes in magic. While acknowledging that professional illusionists create incredible performances, Aurand embraced the fun of the moment, agreeing that as long as a magician is taking the stage at the Dixon Theatre, magic is real enough for everyone to enjoy.
