Along the Rock: S3 Ep 173-20 Years of Cops & Bobbers: Free Fishing, Prizes & Family Fun in Dixon!

Hosted by Kierstyn Long, Article by Sara Bellows
The Dixon Police Department is preparing to celebrate a milestone as its annual Cops and Bobbers fishing derby returns for its 20th year, continuing a tradition that brings local families, young anglers, and law enforcement together for a morning outdoors.

Detective Brad Dempsey joined host Kierstyn Long on Along the Rock to discuss the event, which has grown significantly over the past two decades. Designed for children ages 15 and younger, the free fishing derby offers much more than a chance to catch fish. Participants enjoy food, prizes, raffles, and an opportunity to interact with Dixon police officers in a relaxed, family-friendly setting.

The event has become a valuable way for officers to connect with the community outside of emergency situations. Throughout the morning, officers help children weigh their catches, answer questions, and spend time talking with families while assisting around the pond.

Originally held at Lowell Park, the derby moved to Page Park several years ago to provide easier access, better parking, and a more central location. Since the move, participation has increased dramatically, growing from around 20 to 30 young anglers to crowds of 70 to 80 children, along with their parents and guardians.

Another factor in that growth has been the addition of free event T-shirts for preregistered participants. This year’s event features an all-new shirt design that incorporates the American flag in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary, giving returning participants another reason to attend.

One of the event’s biggest strengths is its accessibility. Families do not need to own fishing equipment or spend money to participate. Thanks to years of community support, organizers have assembled fishing rods, reels, bait, and other supplies that can be borrowed by children who arrive without gear. Food, drinks, and prizes are also provided at no cost.

The entire event is funded through donations from local businesses and community members who support getting children outdoors and creating positive interactions between youth and law enforcement. Community contributions have supplied both equipment and financial support, allowing organizers to continue offering the event free of charge.

This year’s event also includes a new partnership with Culver’s, which will provide lunch following the fishing portion of the derby. Organizers have shortened the event from three hours to two, recognizing that younger children often have shorter attention spans. Fishing will conclude before lunch, followed by awards, raffles, and prize giveaways.

Every participant will receive a raffle ticket for several outdoor- and fishing-themed prizes, with organizers planning some of the largest giveaways the event has offered.

The 20th Annual Cops and Bobbers will be held Saturday, Sept. 19, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Page Park in Dixon. Families are encouraged to arrive before the official start time to register, borrow equipment if needed, and secure a fishing spot along the shoreline.

Advance registration is not required to participate, but children who preregister by Sept. 10 will receive a free commemorative event T-shirt. Preregistration also helps organizers estimate attendance for food and supplies.

Parents, grandparents, and other family members are encouraged to attend alongside participating children. While the fishing competition is reserved for youth ages 15 and younger, food and activities are planned for accompanying family members as well.

As the event reaches its 20th anniversary, organizers hope another generation of local families will spend the morning making memories, enjoying the outdoors, and strengthening community relationships—one fish at a time.
