Founded in 2006 by Barb and George Schwamberger, PFLAG Sauk Valley was created to provide support, education, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ individuals and their families throughout the Sauk Valley. As one of more than 400 PFLAG chapters across the United States, the local organization has spent two decades connecting people with resources, offering guidance, and fostering a more inclusive community.
McKanna explained that while many people assume PFLAG primarily serves young people, the organization welcomes individuals of all ages. Whether someone is a parent whose child has recently come out, an adult exploring their own identity, or simply someone seeking to understand LGBTQ+ issues better, PFLAG strives to meet people where they are.
Education is central to the organization’s mission. In addition to providing one-on-one support and resource referrals, PFLAG Sauk Valley offers workplace and organizational training on LGBTQ+ topics, helps connect people with affirming healthcare providers, and works with educators to better support LGBTQ+ students.
The organization’s annual picnic serves as both a celebration and its annual membership meeting, where board transitions are recognized. More importantly, it provides an opportunity for community members to gather, share a meal, and build connections in a relaxed setting.
The picnic features pulled pork and pulled chicken provided by PFLAG, along with a potluck of side dishes brought by attendees who wish to contribute. Guests can enjoy yard games, conversation, and fellowship, with approximately 50 people typically attending each year. Bringing a dish is encouraged but not required, and everyone is welcome regardless.
McKanna emphasized that the event is open not only to members but to anyone interested in learning more about PFLAG. She said the picnic offers an excellent opportunity to meet longtime members, ask questions, and discover the organization’s resources in an informal environment.
Throughout the year, PFLAG Sauk Valley continues to serve the community by helping families navigate a loved one’s coming out, assisting transgender individuals seeking guidance, answering questions from educators and employers, and providing LGBTQ+ inclusion training for workplaces and organizations.
As an entirely volunteer-run organization, PFLAG welcomes new volunteers to assist with community events, outreach, and board service. Those interested in getting involved or learning more are encouraged to contact the organization by email or through its website and social media.
As PFLAG Sauk Valley celebrates two decades of service, the anniversary picnic offers both a chance to recognize the organization’s history and an opportunity to welcome new faces into a community built on support, education, and advocacy.
