Along the Rock: S3 Ep 24-Battle of the Badges Chili Cookoff | Rock Falls Police vs. Rock Falls Fire

Hosted by Nathan Stahr, Article by Beth Patzka
On this episode of Along the Rock, host Nathan Stahr sits down with Cameron Gonzalez and Ryan McKenna from the Rock Falls Fire Department and Rock Falls Police Department to talk about a friendly rivalry that has quickly become a favorite local tradition, the annual Battle of the Badges Chili Cookoff.

Now in its third year, the cookoff was created as a way to strengthen the connection between first responders and the community they serve. While both departments have long participated in fundraising efforts such as “Fill the Boot” campaigns, organizers felt there was an opportunity to create something more interactive, an event that would bring residents and first responders together in a fun, relaxed setting.

The result is a head-to-head chili showdown between the Rock Falls Fire Department and the Rock Falls Police Department.

Because the two agencies share the same building and frequently work side-by-side on calls, the competition adds an extra layer of camaraderie and bragging rights. What started as a simple idea has grown into a well-attended community event that continues to build momentum each year.

The format is straightforward. Attendees pay $10 for all-you-can-eat chili and get the opportunity to sample 10 different entries. After tasting, guests cast their votes to determine individual winners and which department takes home the overall team title. Children 10 and under are admitted free.

While individual awards are given to the top three chili recipes, the ultimate prize is the team victory. The Fire Department has claimed the team win the past two years, though standout entries from both sides, including previous top finisher Detective Sergeant Jeremy Vander, have kept the competition tight.

Last year even saw a tie that required a tiebreaker vote, underscoring just how competitive the event has become.

This year’s Battle of the Badges Chili Cookoff will be held February 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the American Legion. Organizers say turnout has been strong the past two years, and they hope to see continued growth as more community members come out to taste, vote and support their local first responders.

More than just a cookoff, the event highlights the partnership between police, fire personnel and the residents they serve, proving that sometimes the best way to build community is over a bowl of chili.
