Dr. Segura shared that his passion for education began during his own high school years, where dedicated teachers invested time, encouragement, and belief in his potential. Those experiences not only shaped his confidence but also inspired him to pursue teaching as a career, with a desire to give back the same support he once received.
That same sense of mentorship guided him toward leadership. Early in his teaching career at a middle school in Illinois, a principal recognized his strengths and encouraged him to consider administrative roles. That moment, paired with ongoing mentorship, sparked Dr. Segura’s interest in educational leadership and reinforced his belief in service-oriented leadership rooted in connection and care for others.
Most recently, Dr. Segura served as principal at Woodstock North High School. He explained that the high school principalship closely mirrors the responsibilities of a superintendent, requiring constant communication with students, staff, families, and the wider community. Managing academics, extracurricular activities, athletics, and community events has prepared him well for the broader scope of district leadership.
Relationship-building stands at the center of Dr. Segura’s approach. He emphasized the importance of visibility, accessibility, humility, and kindness, noting that leadership is fundamentally about service. By being present in schools, attending community events, and listening to families and staff, he aims to build trust and ensure that all voices are heard.
Dr. Segura also discussed Rock Falls’ strong and diverse community, including its significant Hispanic population. With a background as a Spanish language teacher, he brings not only language skills but also cultural understanding. He believes this perspective will help strengthen connections with families, better understand their hopes for their children, and bridge gaps between schools and the community.
What excites him most about stepping into the superintendent role is the alignment he feels with the Rock Falls school board. Dr. Segura strongly believes that schools must support every student’s chosen path, whether that leads to college, the trades, the military, or directly into the workforce. Helping students identify goals and equipping them with the skills to succeed is, in his view, a central responsibility of public education.
Outside of work, Dr. Segura values time with his family above all else. He enjoys being outdoors with his two young sons, playing sports, cooking meals together, and simply spending quality time at home. Family, he shared, is what keeps him grounded and energized.
