The event is designed to make volunteering easier to discover. While many people are familiar with job fairs or college fairs, the Be the Difference Volunteer Fair focuses entirely on connecting people with local organizations that need volunteers. The goal is to create a space where individuals can explore opportunities, meet nonprofit representatives face-to-face, and find meaningful ways to serve their community.
A Growing Event for the Sauk Valley
The volunteer fair originally started in Rockford before being reimagined and expanded into rural communities. Last year marked the first time the event was held locally in Dixon, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Because of that success, organizers decided to bring the fair back and make it an annual tradition for the Sauk Valley.
The event focuses primarily on organizations and residents from Whiteside and Lee counties, creating a central place for people to connect with causes and services that directly impact their local communities.
Event Details
This year’s Be the Difference Volunteer Fair will take place:
- Date: Thursday, April 2
- Time: 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
- Location: Sauk Valley Community College in Dixon
The event is set up as an open-house style fair. Attendees can stop in anytime during the four-hour window and explore between 20 and 30 booths, each representing a different nonprofit or community organization.
Each booth will highlight the organization’s mission and, more importantly, the volunteer roles they need help filling. Visitors can speak directly with representatives, ask questions, exchange contact information, and in some cases even sign up to volunteer on the spot.
Opportunities for Organizations
Nonprofits and community groups that rely on volunteers are encouraged to participate. Organizations ranging from conservation groups to food pantries and community programs are welcome to host a booth and share their mission with attendees.
The fair is designed to be accessible for both sides of the equation. Booth registration is free, and vendors will also be provided lunch during the event. Registration for organizations closes on March 20.
Organizations interested in hosting a booth can register through the Lifescape website or contact the Lifescape office in Rock Falls. Assistance with registration is available through the volunteer coordination team.
Supporting Lifescape’s Mission
The event aligns closely with the mission of Lifescape Community Services, which focuses on helping older adults and individuals with disabilities maintain independence and dignity while remaining active in their communities.
One of Lifescape’s programs supports this goal by encouraging volunteerism among seniors and retirees. Through an AmeriCorps-supported initiative, older adults are connected with opportunities that allow them to stay engaged, give back, and continue playing an active role in the community.
The volunteer fair serves as a natural extension of that mission by creating opportunities for people of all ages to become involved. Whether someone is a student who needs volunteer hours, a professional looking to give back, or a retiree searching for a meaningful way to stay active, the fair provides a place to get started.
A One-Stop Shop for Volunteering
With dozens of organizations under one roof, the Be the Difference Volunteer Fair offers a simple and efficient way for residents to explore service opportunities that match their interests, schedules, and skills.
Instead of searching online or reaching out to organizations individually, attendees can meet representatives directly, learn about multiple causes in one visit, and find the volunteer role that fits them best.
For those interested in making a difference in their community, April 2 provides the perfect opportunity to take the first step.
