What began years ago as a one-day Earth Day cleanup has steadily grown into something much more meaningful. Originally organized as a partnership with the city, the effort focused on sprucing up downtown once each spring. In recent years, however, organizers saw an opportunity to expand both the reach and the impact. About four years ago, the program was reimagined into a monthly event, giving volunteers the chance to make a difference on a regular basis while building relationships along the way.
Now held on the fourth Saturday of each month from March through October, Team Up 2 Clean Up brings volunteers together at Dale Park before sending them out in groups to tackle different sections of downtown. Participants are equipped with gloves, grabbers, and safety vests before heading out to collect litter and improve the appearance of public spaces. The structure is simple but effective, ensuring both safety and collaboration while covering a wide area of the city.
One of the most notable aspects of the initiative has been the strong turnout from local students. Much of that participation has been driven by volunteer programs that encourage community involvement, but the impact goes far beyond simply earning service hours. Students from multiple communities, including Sterling, Dixon, Polo, and beyond, have come together, often meeting for the first time while working side by side. These interactions have sparked new friendships and created a sense of shared responsibility that extends beyond city boundaries.
While student involvement has been a major strength, organizers are eager to see even broader participation. The event is open to everyone, and there is a strong push to encourage adults, families, and community members of all backgrounds to get involved. The accessibility of the project makes it easy for anyone to participate, regardless of age or ability, and it offers an immediate sense of accomplishment.
Beyond the physical results, the initiative aligns closely with the mission of Sterling Main Street. Keeping the downtown clean is a key part of maintaining a welcoming and vibrant environment. Beautification efforts such as landscaping and decorative elements can only go so far if litter is present, making regular cleanup essential to the overall look and feel of the area.
The impact is not just visual. Volunteers often receive encouragement from passersby, and the presence of young people actively improving their community helps reshape perceptions. Seeing students take initiative and care for a space they did not personally impact sends a powerful message and sets a positive example for others.
There is also a deeper benefit tied to personal well-being. Spending time outdoors, engaging in meaningful work, and connecting with others all contribute to a sense of fulfillment. For new residents, especially, the cleanup events provide a welcoming entry point into the community and an opportunity to meet others while making a difference.
Participation in Team Up 2 Clean Up is intentionally simple. There is no requirement to pre-register, and volunteers can show up at the designated time and location. For those needing to document service hours, forms are available on-site, making it easy for students and other participants to receive credit for their efforts.
At its core, the initiative reflects a broader message about community ownership. It challenges the tendency to point out problems without contributing to solutions and instead invites residents to take an active role in shaping the place they call home. The results are immediate, tangible, and rewarding, proving that even small efforts can lead to meaningful change.
As Team Up 2 Clean Up continues to grow, organizers hope to see even more community members step forward, not only to help keep downtown Sterling clean but to strengthen the connections that make the community thrive.
