Along the Rock: S3 Ep 45-Spring into Summer with Rock River Madness!

Hosted by Emma Watts, Article by Sara Bellows
On this episode of Along the Rock, host Emma Watts sits down with Kelly Howlett of Tortoise Multisport to talk about one of Dixon’s most anticipated cycling events of the spring: Rock River Madness. What began as a community initiative has grown into a dynamic, inclusive event that welcomes riders of all skill levels while showcasing the region’s expanding biking opportunities.

Rock River Madness was originally launched by Discover Dixon as an early-season cycling event designed to bring the local biking community together. After three successful years, the organization passed the torch, and Howlett, along with her husband and fellow members of the Rock River Valley Bicycle Club, stepped in to keep the momentum going. Their commitment has helped transform the event into a community-driven experience that continues to grow in both participation and impact.

At its core, Rock River Madness is about getting people outside and on their bikes. It is not a competitive race, but rather an opportunity for riders to challenge themselves at their own pace while exploring the scenic routes Dixon has to offer. The event features both trail and road ride options, making it accessible to everyone from beginners to seasoned cyclists.

For trail enthusiasts, participants can choose between a six-mile family-friendly ride, a 10-mile route that covers the main trail systems, or a 13-mile option that includes Dixon’s most technical and challenging terrain. These trails wind through wooded areas and rolling landscapes, offering a mix of fun and difficulty for those looking to push their limits.

Road cyclists also have a range of choices. The longest route is a 100-kilometer ride, designed as a more approachable alternative to the original 100-mile course. Additional options include a 50-kilometer route and a shorter 16-kilometer ride that caters to casual riders and families. With the event scheduled for early May, participants can expect anything from crisp spring air to warm, summer-like conditions, adding an extra layer of unpredictability to the experience.

One of the standout aspects of Rock River Madness is its focus on inclusivity. Discounted registration is available for riders 16 and under on shorter routes, encouraging younger cyclists to get involved. Riders aged 60 and over also receive a price break, reinforcing the event’s mission to welcome participants of all ages and abilities.

Beyond the ride itself, the event plays a vital role in supporting local trail development. Proceeds go directly to the Rock River Valley Bicycle Club, which works closely with the Dixon Park District to maintain and improve the area’s trail systems. This collaboration ensures that trails remain safe, sustainable, and enjoyable while preserving the natural beauty of the landscape.

Participants can expect a well-organized event day, complete with clearly marked routes, aid stations for hydration and snacks, and support services if needed. Safety is a top priority, with strong encouragement for riders to wear helmets and ensure their bikes are in good working condition before the ride. A support and gear team will also be available to assist riders along the course if issues arise.

Rock River Madness takes place on May 2, 2026, with the start and finish line located near Wooden Wonderland Park on Washington Avenue in Dixon. Registration is available online through RunSignup bikesignup.com/Race/IL/Dixon/RockRiverMadnessDixonIllinois, as well as via QR codes on event flyers throughout the community. Those with questions can also stop by Tortoise Multisport for more information.

With its combination of scenic routes, community collaboration, and inclusive approach, Rock River Madness continues to establish itself as a must-attend event for cyclists across the region. Whether you are looking to challenge yourself or simply enjoy a ride with family and friends, this event offers the perfect way to kick off the cycling season in Dixon.
