Along the Rock: S3 Ep 50-Gaming For a Good Cause | 2026 D8 Summit Convention

Hosted by Emma Watts, Article by Sara Bellows
On this episode of Along the Rock, host Emma Watts sits down with Connor Self, president of D8 Summit Charities, to discuss the return of the D8 Summit Charity Convention and how a passion for tabletop gaming continues to make a meaningful impact across the Sauk Valley region.

D8 Summit Charities began more than a decade ago as a grassroots effort among friends who wanted to combine their love of gaming with a desire to help others. The organization’s first event was created in response to the devastating Washington, Illinois, tornado, raising funds for local relief efforts and a homeless shelter supporting displaced residents. What started as a small gathering quickly proved that gaming could serve a larger purpose, setting the foundation for what would become a registered nonprofit organization in 2019.

Since then, the annual D8 Summit Charity Convention has grown into a multi-day event that draws attendees from across the country. At its peak, the convention hosted hundreds of participants, filling venues with tabletop games, role-playing sessions, and late-night conversations. Following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization adapted by shifting its focus from scale to experience, emphasizing more intimate, community-driven gatherings.

Today, the convention blends structured gameplay with intentional time for connection. Attendees can expect a flexible schedule that allows them to join games at their convenience, whether they plan ahead or arrive ready to jump in. Volunteers bring a wide variety of games, creating opportunities for both seasoned players and newcomers to participate. Dedicated meal breaks encourage guests to step away from the tables, explore local restaurants, or simply sit together and build relationships.

Beyond the games, the event continues to prioritize its charitable mission. D8 Summit Charities raises funds throughout the weekend and distributes them to local organizations, making a tangible difference. Past recipients have included food banks, homeless shelters, suicide prevention initiatives, and youth-focused programs. The group places a strong emphasis on supporting local efforts, carefully selecting organizations that demonstrate meaningful impact in their communities.

In recent years, the Lee County Council on Aging has been a primary beneficiary. Funds raised have helped improve safety within the senior center, create dedicated spaces for social interaction, and expand food support programs for older adults facing rising living costs. Contributions from the D8 Summit have supported meal programs and food distribution efforts, helping ensure seniors have access to reliable nutrition and a welcoming place to gather.

The 2026 D8 Summit Charity Convention is scheduled for April 17 through April 19 at the Lee County Council on Aging senior center and the adjacent Post House Ballroom in Dixon. The event runs daily from morning through late evening, offering three full days of gaming and community engagement. Attendees can purchase badges ranging from single-day access to full weekend passes, with pricing designed to remain accessible while supporting the organization’s fundraising goals.

Registration and event details are available at d8summit.org, where participants can secure badges, browse available games, and plan their weekend experience.
