Along the Rock: S3 Ep 57-An Earth Day Celebration at the Twin City Farmers Market! | Crafts, Produce, and More!

Hosted by Emma Watts, Article by Sara Bellows
On this episode of Along the Rock, host Emma Watts sits down with Lori VanOosten of the Twin City Farmers Market to highlight the return of the outdoor market season and a special Earth Day celebration in Sterling.

The Twin City Farmers Market will kick off its outdoor season on April 25 from 8:00 a.m. to noon, bringing together a full lineup of vendors and activities for the community. The event doubles as an Earth Day celebration, offering visitors not only fresh, locally sourced goods but also family-friendly experiences. One of the featured attractions includes a petting zoo from PNC Little Rascals, a popular addition that continues to draw families each year. Attendees will also have access to free seed packets of native grasses and flowers, encouraging environmentally friendly practices and community involvement in sustainability.

The outdoor market opening is expected to feature between 45 and 50 vendors, creating a vibrant and bustling atmosphere. In addition to the outdoor vendors, the market maintains a strong indoor presence year-round with more than two dozen vendors offering a wide range of goods. Visitors can expect to find everything from fresh produce and seasonal fruits to baked goods, handmade items, and ready-to-enjoy foods.

Throughout the season, the vendor lineup evolves to reflect what is locally available. Shoppers can look forward to seasonal favorites such as blueberries and sweet corn, along with a variety of specialty food vendors. Inside the market, offerings include diverse cuisine options such as Mexican and Puerto Rican dishes, alongside bakeries serving breakfast items like biscuits and gravy, breakfast casseroles, mini pies, and fresh coffee.

The market continues to host themed events throughout the year to keep the community engaged. A back-to-school celebration is planned later in the season, followed by a Halloween-themed trick-or-treat event on October 31, which will also feature the return of the petting zoo to close out the outdoor season.

For those interested in becoming vendors, the Twin City Farmers Market offers an application process through its website. Applicants must meet the requirements of a maker’s market, meaning all goods must be homemade, homegrown, or handcrafted. While the April 25 opening is already at full capacity, limited vendor opportunities may be available throughout the season.

Accessibility remains a key focus for the market. Through the SNAP program and a partnership with the Experimental Station Link of Illinois, eligible participants can double their spending power. Customers who use SNAP benefits receive tokens equal to their purchase amount for eligible food items, along with additional vouchers specifically for fruits and vegetables. These vouchers can also be used at other participating farmers’ markets across Illinois, further expanding access to fresh, nutritious food.

Located at 106 Avenue A in downtown Sterling, the Twin City Farmers Market continues to serve as a hub for local commerce, community connection, and seasonal celebrations. The April 25 event offers a strong start to what promises to be another full and engaging market season.
