Along the Rock: S3 Ep 79-Your Story Matters, Domestic Violence Support Group | A Place For Survivors to Share Their Story

Hosted by Emma Watts, Article by Sara Bellows
On this episode of Along the Rock, host Emma Watts sat down with Jordan Wolford to discuss the launch of a new domestic violence survivor support group to help individuals throughout the Sauk Valley access resources, find healing, and build a sense of community.

Wolford shared that her inspiration for starting the group came from her own experiences surviving multiple forms of domestic violence, including emotional, physical, mental, and sexual abuse. After overcoming years of difficult situations, she recognized a gap in local support services specifically focused on survivors in the immediate community.

While regional organizations and shelters exist, Wolford felt there was a need for a more personal, community-centered support system in the Dixon and Rock Falls area. Having grown up locally, she said she frequently sees stories of domestic violence throughout the area and believes many survivors feel isolated or unaware that support is available.

The support group, called Your Story Matters, officially began meeting earlier this year. Meetings are currently held on Tuesday evenings from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Loveland Community Building in Dixon. Wolford explained that each meeting features a different theme and includes resources, educational materials, and open discussions designed to create a welcoming environment.

Although attendance has not yet reached the level she initially hoped for, Wolford emphasized that she remains committed to the mission. In addition to group meetings, she has spent time meeting one-on-one with survivors and victims through coffee and tea meetups, offering private conversations and guidance for those who may not feel comfortable attending public gatherings.

Wolford discussed how difficult it can be for victims to seek help, noting that many survivors struggle with feelings of shame, fear, or self-blame. Financial dependence, children, emotional attachment, and fear of judgment often prevent victims from leaving abusive situations. She stressed the importance of creating spaces where survivors can speak openly without fear of criticism or exposure.

Throughout the conversation, Wolford reflected on her own healing journey and acknowledged that recovery from domestic violence is an ongoing process. She described how survivors often leave abusive relationships questioning their self-worth and identity, making emotional support and community connections critical parts of healing.

Looking ahead, Wolford hopes to expand the group’s outreach and eventually pursue a career focused on counseling survivors. She also expressed interest in organizing community speak-out events similar to programs she previously participated in in Peoria. Those events would aim to educate the public, raise awareness about domestic violence, and encourage more open conversations surrounding abuse and recovery.

Wolford said the goal of Your Story Matters is to provide a safe, judgment-free space for survivors and victims alike. She emphasized that no one should feel alone while navigating abusive situations or the healing process that follows.

In addition to in-person meetings, Wolford said accommodations such as Zoom participation and added security measures have been offered to help attendees feel safe and comfortable. She also noted that confidentiality remains a top priority for anyone who reaches out for help.

Community members interested in learning more about the group or accessing resources can find Your Story Matters on Facebook, where meeting updates and information are regularly posted.
