The massive historic locomotive will make a stop in Sterling on Tuesday, June 2, from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. along the railroad tracks near the Avenue B crossing by the Sterling Farmers Market. While the stop itself is only scheduled for 30 minutes, the excitement surrounding the train is expected to last all day as visitors from across the Midwest — and beyond — descend on downtown Sterling.
The Big Boy steam engine is one of the most iconic locomotives in railroad history. Originally built decades ago for Union Pacific, the enormous engine is the only operating locomotive of its kind still traveling today. Its previous visit to Sterling in September 2024 drew an estimated 2,000 people, despite very little advance notice. City officials and organizers admitted they were stunned by the turnout and by how far train enthusiasts traveled just to catch a glimpse of the engine.
Visitors previously arrived from states including Florida, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Washington, and Wisconsin, all eager to witness the historic locomotive in person. This year, organizers expect an even larger crowd thanks to increased notice and the train’s connection to the nationwide America 250 celebration tour.
Festivities surrounding the train’s arrival will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until the locomotive departs. Organizers are planning music, food trucks, popcorn, refreshments, photo opportunities, face painting, and commemorative T-shirt sales throughout the event area near the farmer’s market.
3D Sound will provide entertainment during the day, while local vendors and downtown businesses prepare for an influx of visitors. Main Squeeze, Twin City Confectionary, and the theater’s popcorn stand are among some of the food and snack options expected on-site. Organizers also encouraged visitors to explore Sterling’s downtown restaurants, bars, murals, and local shops while spending the day in the city.
Parking will be available throughout downtown Sterling, though officials noted that the main farmers market lot will largely be reserved for pedestrian traffic and limited handicap accessibility parking. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early, wear comfortable shoes, bring sunscreen and lawn chairs, and prepare for large crowds and significant foot traffic throughout the downtown area.
Safety will also be a major focus during the event. While the Big Boy engine will be stopped temporarily, one active railroad line will remain operational throughout the event, meaning Union Pacific staff will closely monitor crowd movement and access near the tracks.
City leaders are also hopeful the new riverfront park area south of the tracks may be open in time for the event, potentially offering additional parking and viewing space. However, no guarantees have been finalized yet.
As excitement continues building online and through calls coming into the city, organizers say the event could become one of Sterling’s biggest gatherings of the year. Community leaders are encouraging attendees to make a full day out of the visit by supporting local businesses, enjoying downtown attractions, and experiencing what may truly be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
For updates, T-shirt information, parking details, and additional announcements leading up to the event, visitors are encouraged to follow Sterling Main Street and the City of Sterling on social media and their websites: sterlingmainstreet.org or sterling-il.gov.
