Designed for children entering third through eighth grade, the College for Kids program gives students ages 8 to 14 the chance to explore technology, creativity, teamwork, and hands-on learning throughout the summer months. The program remains flexible with age requirements, allowing siblings and interested students to participate whenever possible.
This year’s featured classes focus heavily on technology and digital creativity through SVCC’s partnership with Black Rocket, a curriculum provider known for STEM-based educational programs. Students can participate in classes centered around Pokémon, Roblox, video game development, and artificial intelligence.
Among the featured offerings are Pokémon Masters, Roblox game design, Make Your First Video Game, and a new AI Designer and Developer course. The AI class is being introduced this year to help students better understand one of today’s fastest-growing technologies and how it can be used effectively and creatively.
Classes are held on the SVCC campus in Dixon from Monday through Thursday. Morning sessions from 9 a.m. to noon are geared toward younger students ages 8 to 11, while afternoon sessions from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. are designed for students ages 11 to 14.
The program encourages collaboration and creativity while helping students connect with peers from communities across the Sauk Valley area. Students work together on projects, develop problem-solving skills, and explore interests that could inspire future hobbies or careers.
In addition to the technology-focused classes, SVCC is also expanding its summer enrichment offerings later in June with a new variety of hands-on classes for students interested in arts, science, theater, cooking, and fashion.
Upcoming enrichment opportunities include Cooking 101, protein ball workshops, theater classes, and fashion design activities. The expanded lineup aims to provide something for every student, whether they are interested in coding, performing arts, culinary activities, or creative design.
Most of the week-long technology classes cost $159, while the AI class is priced at $179 due to additional software and instructional costs. To help ensure the program remains accessible to local families, SVCC also offers scholarships for students who may need financial assistance.
Families interested in registration or scholarship information can visit SVCC College for Kids.
The summer schedule begins June 1 with the Pokémon class, followed by Roblox classes on June 8, AI classes on June 15, additional video game development opportunities, and summer enrichment courses beginning June 22.
Organizers encourage families to register at least one week before classes begin to help with enrollment planning and scheduling. You can register on the Sauk Valley Community College website at svcc.edu/cfk.
