Along the Rock: S3 Ep19-Bringing Life Back to the Stage at Sauk Valley Community College!

Hosted by Emma Watts, Article by Sara Bellows
On this episode of Along the Rock, host Emma Watts sat down with Falan Schwarz, Rowan Geske, and Sam Mauch to discuss the revival of the theater program at Sauk Valley Community College and the growing excitement it has sparked among students and the broader community.

The conversation centered on how the idea to revive theater in Sauk Valley originated. Falan explained that she and the club’s co-founder, Ann McFarland, both have long histories in theater, particularly from their time at Dixon High School. When they arrived at Sauk Valley, they noticed a clear absence of active theater programming despite strong interest in the area. Recognizing both the demand and the opportunity, they reached out to campus club organizers. What started as a simple email quickly grew once the minimum number of interested students was reached, and momentum continued to build from there.

The guests emphasized that college-age students in the region often have limited access to theater opportunities that fit around class schedules and work commitments. By bringing theater directly to Sauk Valley, students could participate during the day while still balancing their other responsibilities. They also pointed out that the Jerry Mathis Theater, a professional-quality space on campus, had largely gone unused for theatrical performances. Reviving the theater there felt both necessary and timely, especially given the legacy of Jerry Mathis and the vibrant theater culture that once existed at the college.

One of the first major steps in this revival was a variety show held last November. Sam described the decision to launch with a large, inclusive production as a way to showcase the range of talent within the new club and gauge community interest. Club members were encouraged to bring acts they were passionate about, resulting in a diverse lineup that included singing, dancing, monologues, skits, and improv. Rehearsals came together quickly, and the show exceeded expectations.

Community response to the variety show was overwhelmingly positive. Faculty, staff, students, and local residents were excited to see the theater space come alive again. While tickets were not sold, the audience nearly filled the theater, confirming that interest extended well beyond the student body. All three guests were heavily involved behind the scenes, working together to organize performances, manage the stage, and support fellow performers, while also participating in acts themselves.

Looking ahead to 2026, the theater club plans to continue meeting every Monday at 12:30 p.m. in the Jerry Mathis Theater. These meetings focus on improv, warm-ups, theater games, and collaboration. The group’s main focus for the spring is a full-length production scheduled for the weekend of April 17. After considering several options that would fit a smaller cast and budget, the club decided to perform a student-written script titled Fallen Apples, written by Sam Mauch. Originally developed as a low-budget film script, the story translates well to the stage and highlights student creativity both on and off the stage.

The long-term vision for the program is to establish at least one production per semester, continuing to rebuild a strong theater presence at Sauk Valley Community College. Students interested in getting involved are encouraged to attend a meeting or reach out directly to club members.
