Along the Rock: S3 EP21-What is United Way? | Upcoming Events, Partnerships & More!

Hosted by Emma Watts, Article by Sara Bellows
On this episode of Along the Rock, host Emma Watts welcomes Ashley Richter of the Lee and Ogle County United Way and Keri Olson of the Whiteside County United Way for an in-depth conversation about what United Way truly is and how it serves the community beyond the events many people already recognize.

Ashley and Keri explain that United Way has been supporting local communities for decades, raising funds that are reinvested directly into the counties they serve. Through this work, United Way supports more than 20 nonprofit agencies, helping fund both well-known programs and critical services that often operate behind the scenes. From youth organizations like Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts to essential services such as hospice care and child advocacy centers, United Way helps ensure a strong, well-rounded network of social services is available for those who need it most.

The conversation highlights how United Way focuses on long-term community impact rather than quick fixes. Donations made to United Way stay local and are strategically distributed to address the most pressing needs in each community. Ashley and Keri emphasize that individuals and families often require support from multiple organizations, and the United Way plays a crucial role in strengthening that entire system.

Beyond funding partner agencies, both United Ways also run their own internal programs. These initiatives include summer lunch programs, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, and other programs designed to address unmet needs identified in the community. When a need arises and no clear solution exists, United Way often steps in to help.

A major focus of the episode is the 211 helpline, a free, confidential, 24/7 resource that connects people to local services such as housing, food assistance, childcare, and mental health resources. Callers simply dial 211 or can text 898211 to receive information tailored to their county and specific needs. The data collected through 211 also helps United Way identify trends and direct funding to areas where help is needed most.

To raise awareness of this vital service, United Way is hosting 211 Day on February 11. Local restaurants across the region are participating by offering select items for $2.11, turning a fun community outing into an opportunity to learn about available resources. Participating locations include Culver’s, Coffee Crush, Palmyra Pub, Roger That Coffee, and restaurants within the Candlelight Group, among others.

The episode also previews several upcoming events. United Way is partnering to host quarterly Nonprofit Coffee Collective workshops, with the next session scheduled for Tuesday, February 24, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at Sauk Valley Community College. This free workshop will feature a grant-writing presentation aimed at helping nonprofits create stronger, more effective grant applications.

Another upcoming highlight is United We Bingo on Thursday, February 26, at the Dixon Elks Lodge. Attendees can enjoy an evening of bingo, prizes, and community connection, with proceeds supporting United Way initiatives.

Looking ahead to April, Keri shares details about Bid United, an online auction benefiting United Way programs such as the Dolly Parton Imagination Library and the Let’s Feed Our Children program. Community members and businesses are encouraged to donate auction items, ranging from gift baskets to unique experiences.
