Cash and Coffee | Side Hustles and Additional Income

Hosted by Emma Watts and Kayla Tenboer-Sipes
On this episode of Cash and Coffee, hosts Emma Watts and Kayla Tenboer-Sipes sit down to talk about practical ways to bring in extra income, especially for those navigating a variable paycheck.

The conversation centers on a common budgeting question: What should you do if you need a little extra cash? Rather than jumping straight to job listings, Kayla encourages listeners to start with a simple but powerful step. Look in the mirror.

“What do you like to do? What are your habits? What are your hobbies? What gets you excited?” she asks.

Emma shares her own experience turning a creative hobby into income. After discovering a love for crafting and jewelry making in eighth grade, she began selling her creations at vendor shows and eventually opened an Etsy store. What started as a passion project became a steady side hustle, and one that fits naturally into her budget and financial goals.

The hosts explore several other flexible income ideas that can work around a full-time job or family schedule. App-based driving and delivery services such as Uber, Instacart, Amazon Flex, Walmart Spark, and DoorDash allow people to earn money on their own time. For those who enjoy working with children, babysitting is another option, with Illinois allowing individuals to watch up to three children without a license.

Seasonal and neighborhood-based opportunities are also discussed. Snow removal in the winter, lawn care in warmer months, and helping elderly neighbors with outdoor chores can all provide extra income. The key, they emphasize, is flexibility and choosing work that aligns with your interests and lifestyle.

But the most important piece of advice is to have a goal.

Kayla shares that when she and her husband were aggressively paying off debt, they both picked up additional work, cleaning houses and working overtime, with a specific end goal in mind. That purpose made the extra hours worth it.

“When you’re tired after a full-time job, you need to remember why you’re doing it,” Kayla says. “We’re going to get this debt paid off. We’re going to hit that goal.”

Whether it is paying down debt, building savings, or even just covering pizza and ice cream night, the hosts remind listeners that side gigs work best when they are intentional.
