Known as the “Snapping Turtle” hike, the approximately 4.6-mile trek will begin with participants meeting at Lock 11, located just north of Tiskilwa, at 1:30 p.m. Hikers will then be shuttled to Lock 6 to begin the walk along the historic canal.
This section of the Hennepin Canal was one of former hike leader Ed Herrmann’s favorite stretches and is also known as the “Ed Herrmann Memorial Hike” in his honor.
Directions to Lock 11 are as follows: Travelers coming from Princeton should take Main Street south out of town and continue until crossing the canal. The lock will be located on the left. Those traveling from the south should take County Road 1800 East north out of Tiskilwa for approximately one mile and watch for a sign on the right.
Participation is open to the public, and neither membership in the Friends of the Hennepin Canal nor a registration fee is required. Organizers encourage community members to attend, bring a friend, and dress appropriately for the weather.
