The story of Hartig Drug in Prophetstown is more than the story of a pharmacy. It is a story about a community that refused to lose local healthcare.
In 2005, when Prophetstown’s downtown pharmacy closed, residents immediately felt the impact. Families, seniors and caregivers suddenly found themselves traveling to Sterling, Morrison or Rock Falls for prescriptions and everyday healthcare needs. Local businesses also noticed fewer visitors to Main Street, highlighting just how important a hometown pharmacy is to the health and vitality of a small community.
Recognizing what was at stake, then-Mayor Bud Thompson began searching for a long-term solution. After connecting with Hartig Drug, a family-owned pharmacy company based in Dubuque, Iowa, he worked alongside community leaders to bring local pharmacy services back to Prophetstown. When Richard Hartig, then CEO of Hartig Drug, visited Prophetstown, he saw a community that cared deeply about its future. Through a unique partnership, the City of Prophetstown purchased the downtown building and leased it to Hartig Drug, ensuring local residents would once again have access to hometown pharmacy care.
When the pharmacy opened in September 2006, the community responded with overwhelming support. Residents welcomed the return of local prescription services, healthcare advice and everyday essentials—especially those for whom traveling outside the community was difficult.
Twenty years later, Hartig Drug remains committed to the same values that inspired its arrival in Prophetstown: personal relationships, trusted healthcare advice and caring for neighbors. Today, the pharmacy provides prescription services, immunizations, medication management, health screenings and a wide variety of health and convenience products, all delivered by a team dedicated to serving the community.
“Our story in Prophetstown has always been about partnership,” said Charles Hartig, CEO of Hartig Drug. “This pharmacy exists because community leaders believed local healthcare mattered, and because residents have chosen to support it. We are grateful for that trust every day.”
As Hartig Drug looks toward the future, the company encourages residents to continue investing in local healthcare by choosing their hometown pharmacy for prescriptions, vaccinations, over-the-counter health products and personalized care. Every prescription filled locally, every immunization received close to home and every visit to the store helps preserve access to healthcare in Prophetstown. Supporting local businesses helps strengthen Main Street, supports local jobs and ensures future generations can continue receiving convenient, personalized care without leaving their community.
“As someone who grew up in Prophetstown, it has been incredibly rewarding to now serve this community as a pharmacist. In a rural town like ours, having a local pharmacy means having access to healthcare you can trust close to home,” said Nicole Heun, pharmacist at Hartig Drug in Prophetstown. “My pharmacy career actually began right here at this Hartig Drug store, where I worked as a pharmacy technician while I was in college. After spending a few years living out of state, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to return. Our patients know they can come in, ask questions and receive personalized care from people they know and trust. I’m incredibly proud of the work we do at Hartig Drug.”
Hartig Drug thanks the residents of Prophetstown for allowing its team to be part of their families’ healthcare journey over the past two decades and looks forward to serving the community for many years to come.
