Across the country, League of Women Voters partners led more than 300 activations centered on increasing voter engagement, turnout and education, with particular emphasis on young voters and community partnerships.
“Our mission is to empower voters and defend democracy,” said LWV Illinois President Becky Simon. “Right now our nation is in a Constitutional crisis, so as we approach the crucial midterm elections, the League of Women Voters of Illinois is hard at work.”
The League of Women Voters of Illinois kicked off the day with a statewide poll watcher training. Local Leagues then followed throughout the day with a range of activities, including voter registration, back-to-school backpack giveaways, postcard parties, election celebrations and panel discussions. The events were held at locations including public libraries, farmers markets and parks.
The League of Women Voters of Central Kane County met at the Geneva Public Library for a postcard writing party and at the Batavia Farmers Market to register voters. The League of Women Voters of DeKalb County held a rally, while the League of Women Voters of Glen Ellyn hosted a documentary screening and panel discussion about John Lewis at College of DuPage.
“With over 4,300 members in 43 local Leagues, the League of Women Voters of Illinois is uniquely positioned to reach out to Illinoisans to promote democracy at the grassroots level,” said Simon.
