Submitted
Florence D. Mertes, nee Krzywda formerly of Des Plaines, was born on October 28, 1928, in Chicago Illinois to Julie and Peter Krzywda passed away on June 12, 2024.

She married the love of her life, Melvin J. Mertes on October 23, 1948, and had two children: a daughter, Donna True, and a son, Drake Mertes (Wendy). After Melvin passed away in 1991, she remained in their home until moving to Brookdale in Des Plaines in 2022. In 2024 Florence moved to Heritage Square in Dixon, Illinois to be closer to Drake and Wendy.

In addition to her son and daughter, she leaves behind four grandchildren, Tyler Mertes (Cory), Morgan Branson (Mark), Max True, and Samantha True. Also missing her are eight great-grandchildren: Blaike, Melvin, and Aida Mertes; Vaughn, Liv, and Nolan Branson; Eva and Sofia True; her beloved nephew Doug Strawa (Joseph Sinico); and her dear and loyal friends Joyce Arneson and Margaret Smith. She was preceded in death by her sister Helen Strawa (Michael) and brother Thaddeus Krzywda.

Florence was the owner of Deemer Graphics in Des Plaines until her retirement in 1990. She and Melvin also owned Diamond Screen Process in Des Plaines which she ran for a few years after his death. Florence loved working in her garden and took great pride in her corner lot on Sixth Avenue in Des Plaines where she lived and raised her family for close to 70 years. She loved her family and looked forward to the family gatherings. Her years as a member of the Harmonairs brought her wonderful memories and lifelong friends. We will miss her in the middle of our family pictures.

Private family service and burial of cremains will be held at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines at a later date.

Arrangements by the Jones Funeral Home in Dixon. Condolences can be left at www.thejonesfh.com.
