Laurie (Lee) Hardesty passed peacefully in her home on Friday, August 7th, 2026.

Laurie was born on June 23rd, 1952, in Sterling, Illinois, to Arthur and Bernice(Schoaf) Zemke. The youngest of five, she grew up in Sterling, attending Galt Grammar School and graduating from Sterling High School in 1970. Laurie later continued her education, attending Sauk Valley Community College and earning her CNA certificate there.

Laurie kept her roots close to home, raising her family in Rock Falls and working in a variety of occupations. She spent several years managing local bakeries before becoming a CNA and personal caregiver. Most recently, she worked as a cashier at Kelley’s Market (formerly Schreiner Oil Co.) in Rock Falls for more than 25 years, where she was known to all as Lee. Her spirit and wit endeared her to generations of customers, earning her a loyal following and many friendships over the years.

When she wasn’t working, Laurie enjoyed time with her family, cooking, and reading. An avid dog lover, she especially enjoyed the companionship of the many pets she had over the years. More recently, Laurie enjoyed playing Words With Friends with people from all over the world, forming friendships with many of her “opponents”, including some who lived as far away as Australia. Laurie also treasured spending time with her grandchildren and watching them grow.

Survivors include two daughters, Cassi(Chris) Johnson of Rock Falls and Whitney(Davie) Hughes of Sterling; two sons, Brian(Erin) Haan of Davenport, IA and Darren(Brandi) Haan of Dixon; one sister, Sandy Marlatt of Ottawa, IL; two brothers, Kenneth Zemke of Rock Falls and Steve(Sue) Zemke of Rock Falls; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Harvey Zemke; sister-in-law Sue(Kenneth) Zemke; Brother-in-law Don(Sandy) Marlatt.
