Obituary-Lutvi “Louie” Dalip

Submitted
It is with hearts heavy as stone that we announce the passing of Lutvi (Louie) Dalip, a loving father, devoted husband, caring brother, beloved son, and incomparable grandfather.

Born on October 10th, 1945, in Arvati, Macedonia, Louie grew up on a small farm in an isolated village, worlds away from the life he would one day build in America. Raised by his parents alongside his older brother and three younger brothers, he learned quickly how, above all else, family came first.

At the age of 15, Louie embarked on a voyage from Arvati to the United States accompanied by his eldest brother Sami. With nothing but a passport, a few belongings, and the hope for better opportunities, he landed in the arms of the City of Big Shoulders, Chicago. While attempting to find his way in the Windy City, he met Susan, a remarkable young woman who frequented the restaurant where he was a cook. Immediately, he fell in love with her, and soon thereafter, they married and had two beautiful daughters.

It didn’t take long for Louie to evolve from a self-taught chef into a restaurant owner, and for nearly fifty years, he fed communities as not only the chef he was, but the friend he became to all who entered his doors. Although he owned multiple restaurants throughout his life, wherever he sowed his roots, people admired both his cooking and his hospitality, considering it a second home and a clean, well-lit place to relax.

Upon retirement, Louie had the time to focus solely on the thing he found most important all those years ago as a young boy: family. Even while removed from his life as a chef and business owner, wherever he went, he made the people he met feel like an extension of his ever-growing family. Anyone who knew him would say he was a loving man, and someone unforgettable whom you could count on to make you smile and feel at home.

Outside of his passion for making the people around him happy, he was a proud Albanian, and made it crystal clear to everyone he knew. He also never missed a week of playing the lottery, and was known for his catchphrases, many of which his family and friends still use today. He was a homebody at heart: someone who loved to lounge on the couch, drink Turkish coffee, watch true crime shows, and spoil his round and cherished Chihuahua, Maggie. If you had a conversation with him, you’d learn quickly he was a man of very few words, but if you got him going on topics such as history or politics, he would talk to you all day.

On September 24th, 2026, Louie passed away peacefully at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, Illinois.

He is survived by his adoring wife of 60 years, Susan Dalip; his daughters, Liz Emini and Kim McMahon (Mike); his grandchildren, Gani and Bree Emini, and Jake McMahon (R’ree); and his brothers, Bashkim Dalipi, Agim Dalip, and Nesim Dalipi.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Feride, his father, Gani, his cousin, Nexhme, and his brother, Sami Dalip.
