Born on July 15, 1949, in Sterling, Illinois, to Donald and June (Smith) Crofton, Michael was one of six children and shared his birthday — and much of his life — with his twin brother, Doug. He spent his career in public service with the Illinois Department of Transportation before retiring in 2002.
Mike was happiest when he was with friends, family, and his dog, or hunting for antiques. He enjoyed reading, especially military history, and took great pride in his family’s contributions in service to the nation. He had a well-known eye for classics and a particular appreciation for watches. He never met a stranger and gave generously of his time and resources.
He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Douglas Crofton, and his sisters Carol Hadley and Linda Hughes.
He is survived by his sons Elliott (Tanya), currently serving in the U.S. Army in Vienna, Austria, and Reilly (fiancée Amanda) of Franklin Grove; his grandchildren Emilia and Aiden; his daughter Tracey Friday and her children Jacob, Laurel, Tanner, and Taylor; his sister Shirley Conrady, as well as his sister Donna Rife, who passed away March 15, 2026; sister in law, Berta Crofton, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 20, 2026, at McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls, Illinois, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Dalmus Meeks officiating.
