He was born Oct. 2, 1954, in Spring Valley, Illinois, the son of Floyd and Gladys (Newborn) Welch. Richard was a farmer and truck driver. He enjoyed coin collecting and trap shooting.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his children, Jennifer (Chris) Ahrens of Rock Falls, Jesse Welch of Sterling, and Jason (Amanda) Welch of Sterling; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Roy (Sue) Welch of Amboy, and his sister, Diane (Ray) Byers of Ohio, Illinois.
Graveside services will be Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at 1 p.m. at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling. Arrangements were completed by the Jones Funeral Home in Dixon.
