Born on January 12, 1944, in Rockford, Illinois, to Carl and Marion Rockman, Sherry lived a life filled with love, generosity, and devotion to her family, friends, and community.
Sherry dedicated over 40 years to her career as a cosmetician and manager. At the age of 50, she returned to school to become a licensed beautician, demonstrating her determination and passion for her craft. She continued working until her retirement at the age of 73. Her career was more than a job—it was a reflection of her commitment to helping others feel their best.
In 1976, Sherry moved from Rockford to Sterling with her three children—Brent Young (Shauna), Burke Young (Gretchen), and Lisa Tate (Tyler)-where she created a loving home and built a life centered on family and community. In 1984, she met Fernando “Freddy” Gallegos, whom she lovingly referred to as her “forever.” Together they shared two decades of marriage until Freddy’s passing. Sherry embraced Freddy’s children—Dan Gallegos (Sharon), David Gallegos (Lynn), Francine Hemminger, and Felicia Jackson—as her own, forming a blended family full of love and connection.
Sherry’s life was defined by her boundless generosity and compassion. She was known for always being there for others—whether offering emotional support, financial help, or simply lending an ear. Those who knew her will fondly remember her knack for “reading charts,” a unique way she connected with people around her. Her home was rarely empty; she welcomed friends and family with open arms and an open heart.
A devoted grandmother to Samantha Fordham, Amanda Trujillo, Jessenia Trujillo, Santana Trujillo, Tristan Young, Gracie Young, Ethan Young, Bryan Young, Katie Young, Jacob Young, Brittany Gallegos, Christopher Gallegos, Justin Gallegos, Tricia Gallegos, Aiden Tate, Kennedy Tate, Austin Jackson, Brandon Jackson, Cody Jackson, Michael Gallegos and Cassandra Urrutia—and great-grandmother to several great-grandchildren—Sherry cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren. She also shared close bonds with her brother Brad Rockman (Sue) and in-laws Ezekiel Gallegos (Isabelle) and Reguino Gallegos.
Sherry was predeceased by her parents, Carl and Marion Rockman; her beloved husband, Fernando Gallegos; her brother Richard “Dick” Rockman; her daughter Francine Hemminger; and brothers-in-law Joel Ramirez, Noe Ramirez, and David Ramirez.
Sherry found joy in the simple pleasures of life: spending time with friends at local diners or celebrating life’s milestones surrounded by loved ones. She had a deep love for animals and an enduring faith that guided her actions. She believed in angels—collecting them as symbols of hope and grace—and lived as an angel on earth through her kindness and selflessness.
Sherry’s legacy is one of love and service. She touched countless lives with her warmth and generosity. Her memory will forever be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to know her.
May Sherry’s spirit continue to inspire acts of kindness in all who remember her. A Visitation will be held on May 20, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM with a time of sharing at 11:00 AM at McDonald Funeral Home in Sterling, 505 1st Ave. Graveside Service will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Sterling.
