On this episode of Along the Rock – Pet of the Week, host Kierstyn Long welcomed Michelle Longtin from Happy Tails Humane Society along with a very special guest, Mattie, a gentle 2-year-old terrier mix searching for her forever home.

Mattie has quickly become a favorite at the shelter thanks to her calm personality, affectionate nature, and ability to fit into almost any household. She gets along well with other dogs and cats, is potty trained, walks nicely on a leash, knows how to sit, and keeps her kennel clean. While she still enjoys playing in the yard, she has a relaxed temperament that makes her an excellent companion for families, couples, or individuals looking for an easygoing dog.

Her journey to Happy Tails makes her story even more touching. Mattie was surrendered to a shelter shortly after giving birth to puppies and found herself on the euthanasia list. When the Happy Tails team noticed the distinctive markings on her back that resemble angel wings, they knew they had to give her a second chance. After being brought to Happy Tails, she was spayed, cared for, and is now healthy and ready to begin the next chapter of her life with a loving family.

Mattie also has a striking appearance. Her incredibly soft coat and one partially blue eye suggest she may have some Australian Shepherd heritage mixed into her terrier background. Combined with her gentle personality, she has become an easy dog to fall in love with.

Michelle shared that adult dogs at Happy Tails have a $200 adoption fee, while puppies are $250 and cats and kittens are $100. The shelter is also preparing for another busy kitten season, making adoptions especially important as more animals continue to arrive.

Beyond adoptions, Happy Tails has several ways for the community to help. The organization will host a Culver’s fundraiser on Tuesday, July 21, from 5 to 8 p.m., where supporters can enjoy dinner while helping raise money for the shelter. Guests simply need to mention Happy Tails when ordering, and a portion of qualifying sales will benefit the organization.

The shelter is also seeking volunteers to assist at its thrift store and is currently asking for donations of cat litter. Everyone who donates litter during July will be entered into a drawing for one of three prize baskets, with winners selected at the end of the month.

Michelle also highlighted Happy Tails’ ongoing low-cost spay and neuter program. The clinic regularly sterilizes more than 20 cats and kittens in a single day while helping reduce pet overpopulation through affordable services for both owned pets and community cats.

Whether someone is looking to adopt a loyal companion like Mattie, volunteer their time, donate supplies, or support fundraising events, there are many ways to make a difference for local animals through Happy Tails Humane Society.
