Zara, estimated to be about 10 and a half years old, has endured a difficult past but continues to show remarkable spirit and love. She was discovered after being left behind in a home for nearly a year following an eviction. Though individuals stopped by occasionally to leave food, she spent that time without consistent care or companionship. After being brought to a county pound with strict time limits, Zara was transferred to Happy Tails, where staff quickly recognized her gentle nature.
Despite her history, Zara is described as healthy, energetic, and full of personality. A benign growth removed from her throat resulted in minor nerve damage, leaving her with a slight facial asymmetry and a squinty eye, but it does not impact her quality of life. She remains playful, affectionate, and eager for attention, showing no signs that her past has diminished her trust in people.
Zara gets along well with male dogs and has done well around respectful children. While she may show some dominance with certain female dogs, she has not displayed aggression. Her interactions with cats are still being evaluated, though her temperament suggests she could adapt with proper introductions. She is quiet, rarely barking, and prefers to spend her time seeking affection or hoping for treats.
Described as low-maintenance, Zara keeps her kennel clean, does not destroy her bedding, and has strong house manners. She would benefit from a home with a fenced yard where she can burn off energy before settling in as a relaxed companion indoors or on a porch. Staff emphasizes that she does not belong in a kennel at her age and is prioritizing finding her a foster or permanent home.
Zara is available for adoption at a reduced senior rate. Those interested can apply in person at the shelter or online through Happy Tails Humane Society’s website by specifying Zara on the application.
In addition to Zara’s story, Longtin highlights an upcoming Father’s Day event at the shelter. A car show fundraiser will take place on June 21, featuring vehicle entries, a lemonade truck, food options, raffles, a bake sale, and new merchandise. The event will also coincide with an influx of adoptable kittens, as the shelter prepares for a busy season. Community members are encouraged to attend, adopt, or consider fostering animals, especially mothers with litters, to help keep them out of kennel environments.
