On this episode of Along the Rock – Pet of the Week, brought to you by the Radar Free Press, host Nicole Bollman welcomes Michelle Longtin from Happy Tails Humane Society to introduce an incredibly sweet and adoptable dog named Sampson.

Sampson is a shepherd mix estimated to be between seven and eight months old. His journey to Happy Tails began after he was found abandoned at a rental home and temporarily taken to an unheated warehouse. Once Happy Tails was contacted, they stepped in to ensure Sampson received proper care and a safe place to land. Since arriving at the shelter, he has been neutered, fully vetted, and prepared for adoption.

Despite his difficult start, Sampson has an exceptionally calm and loving temperament. For such a young dog, he is remarkably well-behaved and gentle. While he enjoys playing with toys and chasing a ball, his greatest joy comes from affection and human attention. His demeanor has impressed staff and trainers alike, especially after he recently handled a public outing with ease, meeting new people and walking confidently on a leash.

Sampson resembles a shepherd or Malinois-type mix, but Michelle emphasizes that he does not fit the common stereotypes associated with those breeds. He is not anxious or overly energetic, but instead relaxed, affectionate, and eager to please. He has completed health testing, is in excellent condition, and is more than ready to move into a permanent home.

Socially, Sampson shines. He does well with children, adults, other dogs, and even cats. His calm and submissive personality makes him a trusted dog for testing interactions with other dogs at the shelter. He is especially well-suited for homes with cats, as he shows no prey drive and is respectful of boundaries.

Those interested in adopting Sampson can fill out an application online at happytailshumanesociety.org or in person. All adoptions are handled by appointment, with meet-and-greets scheduled to ensure the best possible fit. Happy Tails encourages entire families to attend, including current dogs in the household. Sampson’s adoption fee is $200 and includes neutering, microchipping, vaccinations, and a negative heartworm test.

Michelle also shared ways the community can support Happy Tails beyond adoption. The Happy Tails Thrift Outlet, located on Dixon Avenue behind Hardee’s, is once again accepting donations after a period of reorganization. The store is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and all proceeds benefit the shelter. The organization is also in need of large towels, especially with several young puppies currently in care. Donations can be dropped off at either the shelter or the thrift store.

Happy Tails and the thrift outlet are both active on Facebook, where supporters can follow along for updates on adoptable animals and new items available for purchase.

Sampson is a standout dog with a gentle heart, calm personality, and a deep desire to connect with people. Anyone looking for a loyal, loving companion would be lucky to give this special dog a forever home.
