A 1979 graduate of SVCC, Schamberger began her college journey while balancing two part-time jobs and assisting her parents on the family farm. Unsure of her career path at first, she chose Sauk Valley Community College because it allowed her to remain close to home while receiving a high-quality, affordable education.
“Attending Sauk Valley Community College was an excellent education, and the opportunity laid the foundation for a career that I am very proud of,” said Schamberger. “My education instilled in me a love for lifelong learning.”
During her time at SVCC, Schamberger participated in volleyball and basketball and credits her coach, Claire Holmberg, with helping shape her future success.
“Coach Holmberg mentored me both in the classroom and on the court,” Schamberger shared. “She helped build the mindset and confidence I needed to continue my education and pursue my goals.”
After graduating from SVCC, Schamberger attended Northern Illinois University, where she earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She went on to dedicate 39 years to education at Amboy schools, first teaching fifth grade for 20 years before advancing into administration as Dean of Students and later Principal of Amboy Junior High and Central Elementary School.
Throughout her career, Schamberger remained committed to supporting students and fostering strong school communities. She credits SVCC with providing a well-rounded education and lifelong friendships that continue to this day.
Since retiring from education, Schamberger has remained active in the community through fundraising efforts for local organizations and by assisting with daily operations at her family’s business, Long Branch Saloon.
When asked what Sauk Valley Community College means to her in one word, Schamberger answered simply: “Community.”
She also encourages future students to consider the value of starting their education locally.
“SVCC is affordable,” she said. “Don’t go into debt. Be financially responsible. Use SVCC as a springboard to find a career that doesn’t feel like work. Surround yourself with people who lift you up and make you a better person.”
Sauk Valley Community College is proud to celebrate Joyce Schamberger’s lifelong dedication to education, leadership, and community service through this Distinguished Alumni recognition.
