Sprinkler System Leak Forces Evacuation at 2201 E. LeFevre Road

A broken sprinkler head in the attic prompted an emergency response and evacuation at 2201 E. LeFevre Road on Monday.

The Sterling Fire Department responded alongside the Rock Falls Fire Department and CGH EMS after reports of water coming from the ceiling in the southwest area of the facility. Upon arrival, responders found the sprinkler system activated, with staff already evacuating occupants from the affected wing.

Firefighters located a broken sprinkler head above the ceiling and shut off the water supply. In order to fully stop the system, water service had to be shut off to the entire building. Additional hazards were identified, including water entering electrical wiring, light fixtures, and active water heaters.

Due to these conditions, the Sterling Code Enforcement Department was requested to the scene. After evaluating the situation, officials determined the occupants could not safely remain in the building until repairs were completed. A care plan was developed for the displaced residents.

While the company operates another facility in Dixon that could accommodate the occupants, the travel time and level of assistance required exceeded what was considered safe. The Whiteside County Senior Center offered transportation and temporary accommodations, where occupants were cared for until Shepherd’s Premier Senior Living Center was able to relocate them to the Dixon facility.

The East LeFevre Road location will require updates to the fire alarm system, sprinkler system, and electrical systems before it can be reoccupied.
