While en route, units noticed a large volume of smoke and called for a MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) Box 20 to the Box Alarm level, with a Full Still as well. Just as units arrived, the incident was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm.
Arriving companies found the fire to be in the back of the property and involving a large portion of one of the facility’s shred piles. By the time the event was completed, more than 21 fire, EMS, and sheriff’s departments had responded. The scene was also assisted by the Salvation Army and 800-BoardUp. The Red Cross had been en route but was later turned around.
The Sterling Fire Department announced that the fire at the Cimco Recycling Center, 13509 Galt Road, had been extinguished and crews were no longer on scene as of 4:30 p.m. on June 2.
Sterling Fire Chief David Northcutt and the Sterling Fire Department thanked all agencies and organizations that were able to support the incident.
