“What Were You Wearing?” Exhibit Aims to Challenge Sexual Assault Misconceptions at SVCC

Submitted
An exhibit aimed at challenging misconceptions surrounding sexual assault will be on display April 6–8 at the west mall entrance on the Sauk Valley Community College campus.

The “What Were You Wearing?” exhibit is presented by SVCC Student Activities in partnership with the YWCA of the Sauk Valley in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The exhibit features a collection of outfits representing what individuals were wearing at the time they experienced sexual assault, accompanied by their personal stories. The display is designed to confront the harmful belief that a person’s clothing can contribute to or justify abuse, emphasizing that sexual violence can happen to anyone regardless of appearance.

Organizers say the exhibit aims to raise awareness about sexualized violence while encouraging conversation, education, and support for survivors. A content warning is included, as themes of sexual assault, abuse, and rape are present throughout the display.

The exhibit will be open to the public during regular campus hours. For more information, contact SVCC Student Activities.
